First night in new 5er

We made it 350 miles to our first destination with the new cougar we picked up Monday. A little nervous taking off on a trip with new camper. But all went well. Only one “educational” event. The power cord connects on the rear of the trailer. This site has the power pole towards the front. I unhooked and leveled, then connected power. Had to rehook and pull up 8 feet...

Good news is I found out my cord will make it to my sewer connection. As long as the sewer connection is in front of the pole, I’ll be fine.

Not too bad for a first night in new camper.

Welcome and Congratulations. We learned that a 25' power extension ($40) a 25' second fresh water hose ($15) and a 10' sewer extension ($10) are well worth carrying. You'll find more items as you go but hey! Thant's part of the FUN!

^^^^x2. Canonman has it. If you travel around you will be amazed at how some of the sites are set up and/or why. "Extra" lengths of critical items (sewer, water, power) is essential if you travel much.

You didn't mention it, so if your new 5er has a 50A electrical system, I'd recommend an immediate purchase and use of an EMS (electrical management system) - DON"T buy just a "surge protector". Read up on the issue if this is unfamiliar ground for you...

Yes, an EMS will cost about $300. But the first time you plug into a mis-wired shore poser pedestal, it could cost you THOUSANDS of dollars replacing AC units, refrigerators, etc. An EMS is very cheap insurance from a fairly likely event down the road.

I'd recommend the following for great prices and service:

+1 on the EMS. I use a Progressive EMS as it was more out in front when I bought it and was American made at the time. It comes with a Lifetime warranty and I had one die and they immediately replaced mine. I suspect either Surge Guard or Progressive will be a good deal for you.

As far as your power hook up, you will get used to figuring where to stop when you pull into a slot after you ran out of cord the first time. Sometimes, as has been noted, a strange location of the power pedestal relative to the sewer or water will make it a good idea to be able to extend all thos hoses/cables with spares you may never use but will make life more simple if you do.

Exactly what was said above^^^^. And keep in mind, sewer line as the shortest distance makes for the least work. It gets to wear on me putting our extra 15' Rhino out with more slinky trying to make things run down hill.

First night in new 5er

I bought a Progressive EMS when I bought the trailer. I had a south wire for my 30 amp trailer. I also had 30’ extension cord. But didn’t bring it, as it would limit me to 30amp/ one AC... but the stupid in command is on the Fritz now, so I only have one AC anyway!

I do have 30’ of sewer hose and 75’ of water hose. Been camping for 10 years and have accumulated “enough” of all those items. But not in 50 amp yet... LOL

An extension power cord often comes in handy. The power connector on my Laredo is also on the rear of the trailer which strikes me as odd since the power center is located in the middle of the trailer. It would seem a power inlet in the middle would make more sense.

Congratulation on your first night in your new camper!!

Did the same thing last week when we parked into our camping site.......missed the water connection by 18 inches. Solved that by connecting a hose extension. What we did BEFORE we dropped the front jacks, unhooked and leveled the rig was to plugged in the power and turn on the roof-mounted satellite antenna to make sure we were able to access satellite. AND we carry an extra 25 ft 30 and 50 amp power cords and dump hose if we need an extension.

On trailers with a "mouse hole" where the shore power is permanently affixed there has to be a dead space for that cord to go into. Sometimes that's in the bottom of a cabinet, entertainment center, or end table.

One thing no one has talked about and that is if your unit is a 50 amp, better get a 50-30 dogbone cable. You will NOT always get a 50 amp connection. Then the extra power cable extension, the water hose extension, a sewer hose extension and a pair of water proof gloves when you mess with the sewer hose. are a must. While you are shopping, get a Y-connector for the water connection at these RV parks. You MIGHT just have to SHARE a water connection. When I back in or pull into a site, I got a yard stick and marked the depth of my slides, then the "Wife Unit" can easily tell if we have room to open all the slides.

Totally agree with all those extensions, at some point you'll be glad to have all of them.
We stayed at a park in Canada that when they escorted us to the site I ask where to connect to water? The escort pointed to a faucet about 50' away that had about 10 Ys already connected with one empty spot where I added my Y, needless to say we didn't have excessive water pressure, fortunately we had plenty of hose & a Y.
The did yardstick idea I did a bit differently, I cut an old broomstick to that length so there was no mistake/argument looking for the measurement on the yardstick, if you know what I mean.

Since this is your first trip out, my I suggest you also do some checking to ensure the trailer tires are inflated correctly (when cold) and also retorque the lug nuts since they may not have worn in a bit from the trip. I found I needed to measure the trailer height 'cause I forgot the first time I used my 5er and a tree with a large dead branch took the roof off from the front to behind the door in the back (over 20 ft.) on a 28 ft. trailer. Expensive repair for a two week old trailer. Enjoy your trip, but avoid the forest fires.

My trailer is 50 amp with a twist lock connector. No mouse hole.
