Finally did it

So, after reading through many a pages and comments around 1/2 ton trucks towing, so on and so forth... I decided to go to the scales to see where I am with mine.

Info on truck:
2015 Sierra CC 4x4, 5.3l flex, 3.42 gears, tow package

Truck, passengers, full tanks and everything loaded in truck and receiver in hitch:

Frt Axle: 3,500
Rear Axle: 2,680
Total: 6,180

Hooked up Trailer (loaded for a weekend trip with about 3/4 of the fresh water filled - never fill it completely: (take into account trailer is listed at 6300 dry)

Frt Axle: 3,480
Rear Axle: 3,720
Trailer: 7,000
Total: 14,200

I am below total, and guessing slightly above vehicle max. I would definitely not want to go any heavier on the trailer as I think I am just about on the edge of what I consider safe (no offense but everyone has their own definition of that word and please not to take the wrong way, but not looking for your legal opinion on that topic)

The question I have is:

Should I adjust my hitching so that I have slightly more weight towards the front, or am I balanced out fairly decent?

Thanks in advanced for advice on WD setup.

James

James, you are at your GVRW @ 7200 pounds and 800 pounds from CGVW for that truck.

I had a 1500 Silverado w/NHT max tow package and I was very uncomfortable towing with my trailer. My numbers were similar to yours (at GVRW but under CGVW by 800 pounds).

I have since moved on to a 2500 HD.

What does the yellow sticker on the inside of your door jam show for axle weight ratings?

These new (2014, 2015) Sierra's are impressive. Just picked up one that will tow 10,800 and has a payload of 2,015.

I think your weight on the front axle is pretty close to unhitched so that seems fine, but you kinda have to go by the sticker.

That's the funny thing @GMcKenzie the only sticker I can find with anything (on the door jams, etc..) refers to tire pressure.

The only weight on it says not to exceed 1609lbs of combined cargo, I know that GMC says 6800-7200 is the total, but they don't say which version is which.

That 1609 lbs IS the payload before you add stuff like a tool box, hitch, DW, pets, ice chest etc.

Need to read up on how to post pictures.

I have 2 tags. One lists the tire size and pressure and show the max payload. Sounds like what you are looking at. Mine show 2,015 lbs for a 2015 Sierra with the Max Tow (5.3L, 3.73). Sounds like the sticker you are talking about.

I also have one that shows the truck and axle weight ratings. It also shows the tire information.

GVWR 7600LB, GAWR FRT 3950 LB GAWR RR 4300lb

The second one has Transport Canada logos on it so it may not be there for a US model.

You might find the second sticker (the one with Front/Rear axle ratings) in the glove compartment. Some additional information is here: http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2014/08...culations.html

Found the sticker (on the door pillar between the front and back door)... it does say vehicle is 7200 total.

So with that in mind, how am I looking front to back? should I try and get them more equal or more front, etc..?

Thanks again,

James

Don't try to get them equal. Goal is the have the hooked up weight on the front the same as the unhooked weight, and you are damn close to that. If you think the steering is soft, go one more link, but I think you are fine.

Been thinking about this. On the sticker that shows 7,200, what is the GAWR RR (rear axle rating)? I'm thinking it is 3,950 but you may want to check the sticker.

I missed this because my rear is 4,300.

As long as it is 3,950, no worries.
