Sadly, the other thing I have had happen, is getting the single finger salute when pulling on from a ramp - just cause I wasn't going 70 mph when towing.
The police here in South Texas would have to ticket just about every driver. The best thing they could do with yield signs on onramps is to remove them. I drove for decades in Southern California and NEVER had a problem with "Merge". THAT'S the correct signage for an onramp.

I've noticed that at times when I have been in PA, a lot of drivers there too stop for yield signs at the end of the on-ramp. Always wondered about that...

While I have issues with the folks who won't yield or who drive like molasses pours.... it is the idiot that put the exit ramps after the entry ramp I want to get into a dark alley..

Another war story. So, this off ramp from I 205 north the SR 99E North. Ramp is posted 30mph and has it's own merge lane about 1/4 mile long into 99E. Many people just stop and want to cut into or across the 2 lanes of 99E. Can you see the problem, exiting freeway traffic has rear end crashes since no should be stopped. I would stop everybody I seen stop there and never wrote a ticket just explained what a merge lane was. I stop this little old nice lady and am nice to her, no reason to be mean. She gets real mad at me, does the I want your name and badge number. She files a compliant both written and verbal and I am called into the office. She says I was mean and yelled at her and do not know the law. Sometimes I wished for a camera as this was one of those times. After explaining my side and the Lt. looking up crash data. He said I was right and nothing went into my file that time.

Try dealing with it in a loaded semi hauling hay that is 87' long!!! I like the ones that will drive right next to my passenger door until their lane runs out, then instead of speeding up to get 20' feet in front of me, they slam on the brakes to go 100' back. Then they pass me in the left lane and flip me off. But the best ones are the convertibles that are out on their Sunday drive and pull up next to me yelling at me because of the chaff flying off.

I have noticed this throughout the east, Ohio, WV, PA, and on. I would like to see the elimination of yield signs and the use of Merge and Merging traffic signs.

WAY too many who operate vehicles DON"T know how to drive!!!

Nothing better than seeing a line of cars coming down an on ramp bumper to bumper to merge onto a busy highway. Then expect to "merge" successfully.

The biggest issue is that many don't think about the job at hand when driving. It would only take a little attention to make the roads safer or smoother.

Gets me thinking about the idiots that insisting on passing you at the end of a two lane passing zone on a grade then slow down to 50 in a 55 zone!!! Now keep in mind that I was likely climbing that grade a 60 with trailer in tow, but they will race to 70 to squeeze past you at the last moment then the brakes come on!!

Back in my trucking days, we were hauling wheat into Kansas City on US 71. Because of road construction, the left lane was shut. Well aware that a loaded 18 wheeler doesn't stop on a dime, we were maintaining a distance behind the next vehicle. However, the four wheelers saw that as space they had to occupy, so we were constantly slowing and down shifting to keep from rear-ending one of those idiots. Finally, my partner had enough and he pulled over into the left lane (had not come to the construction yet) and pulled along side of 4-5 cars, turned on his right signal and pulled back into the right lane, scattering the whole bunch onto the shoulder. No one passed us after that for at least 2 minutes.

We just returned from the Indy-Tennessee trip and there were several times my wife would cover her eyes. I had one guy that was entering the interstate and never looked. I had nowhere to go. When we were side by side and he ran out of road, he slammed on the brakes and ran through the weeds.
He probably took the next exit looking for a restroom.

If I'm on a 3 lane I'll drive the middle lane.

Not just towing but just everyday driving, would agree that traffic signs are merely a suggestion and not a very strong one at that. Sometimes also, wish I had a sign I could illuminate that says "Signal" it will help you make up your mind. Think for many, driving is the least important thing to think about??? Getting worse I think. Secondly, has anyone else noticed the lack of "side marker lamps/signals" on the newer vehicles. Even though they have LED lighting, if you aren't able to directly look at the light, it isn't visible. What brought this to mind the other day was after purchasing a new ATV that is able to be street legal in some states, the state of SD requires "side marker lamps as well as stop/ tail/ and mirror. Had to laugh and also had to have "Park Lamps"??? Would not be on the road without having my lights on???

I too use the center lane on a 3 lane highway but only issue is often trucks cant use the left lane so they pile up behind or try to pass on the right. So if Im riding at 65 and traffic is faster I will resign myself to the right lane and slide over, if possible/needed at ramps to the next lane.

Kudos to you Chris.

I'm a truck driver. A lot of people don't realize that often times semi's are restricted from using the left lane. So the middle lane is our passing lane. Slow traffic in the middle lane for us is just as aggravating as slow traffic in the left would be for a four wheeler. Even when we are allowed to use the left lane what people don't realize is most semi's are also governed. In order to get better safety ratings, fuel economy or insurance premiums companies will limit the truck's top speed. In most cases they are governed at somewhere between 62-68. So that makes a driver reluctant to even try and pass in left lane because he knows it's gonna take him a couple miles to complete the pass and he will then be the one tying up traffic in the left lane. The other thing is if we try to pass in the left inevitably the offending car in the middle lane will speed up and now we're trapped in the left lane with a governed truck and can't get back over. Just food for thought to people who poke along in the middle and then wonder why the semi tailgates him and doesn't just simply go around. In a lot of cases he can't or he would.

I've read all the posts on this thread and found them all interesting. Tell me if this isn't familiar: No matter what lane you choose to drive in, THAT is the lane that disappears. I don't care what lane we choose, left lane or right lane, towing or not, so help me THAT is the lane that ends. We towed our big boat to Florida a number of years and that got to be a point of humor for DW and I that no matter where we chose to drive it was going to end.

Just like the line at the grocery store, which ever one you pick will be the slowest and there will be an issue.

As for truckers, I try to stay out of the way the best I can, towing or not. I always feel bad when someone is going 50 in the middle lane and a truck is stuck behind them. I always want to blow the horn or even give them a tap to wake them up to what is happening in the world around them.

I understand what you are talking about when we are on a 2 lane highway and a truck pulls out to pass, always seems to be in front of me, they are going 63 and the truck they are passing is going 62. It takes awhile and then toss in a hill...

It is always interesting out there and if I could only get my wife to leave work early or on time we could avoid many of the road issues.

Here in Connecticut, we call them "MASS-HOLES"! , as they race to the Casinos! Even the State Troopers call them that!

Never mind the Yield thing.... they don't have a clue what a Stop Sign or Red Light means!!! And campers are just another excuse for a "BRAKE CHECK"!

I had a BMW sportster 2 seater convertible type cut me off in Foxboro, Ma last month... at a RED light. I laid on the horn... and SMOKED the brakes. Now, the M******* gets out of his car (GOLD CHAINS AND ALL), to come back and "discuss his dis-satisfaction with my choices of calling him out" with me giving him the AIR HORN-N-N-N-N-N-S! As the light turns green, I tell him "Buddy. you got a green light... GET IN IT, DRIVE IT OR I'LL PUSH IT OUTTA MY WAY!!!"

You never saw a FAT *UCK run so fast in your life! LOL

Yes this merge problem is at the very top of my top ten list.
Merge lane is to ACCELERATE up to the speed of traffic flow and merge into it.

Seems like 95%+ people do not accelerate until AFTER they have merged.

I think it should be mandatory for all drivers to spend a few hours in a big rig(with a good driver...this used to be most all truck drivers....sadly this is not the case anymore) as a passenger and they would come away with a whole different outlook .

Little joe to that sums it up for me. People do not get up to speed before they try and merge. If they did that it would make life so much easier.

People are afraid to hit the gas pedal. Some will take a mile or so to get up to speed.

Yes I see the same thing. There are inconsiderate truck drivers too. I always consider my weight, the hills, and how long it may take to pass. I wouldn't hold up traffic over 1 mile an hour. But sometimes we err in judgement and we get caught, or the other vehicle speeds up on us and traps us. Then everyone freight trains us on the right instead of just letting us get back over. It's all about sharing, but no one wants to do that. So some truckers get an attitude, they've been burned so many times before they figure screw you, cuz if I wait you'll just screw me anyway. Everyone thinks there own personal agenda is more important then the other guys', and everyone is always right and everyone else is always wrong.
