Planning a New York Adventure

After a season of shakedown and with both of us retired, we are heading out from MN on a grand 3 week adventure to New York state and back. Our F350 will be pulling our retirement getaway home, a 37' Alpine 3260FL 5th wheel. Our route will take us southeast around Chicago, through northern Ohio, South of Lake Erie through Pennsylvania and into New York east of Corning. Other than taking in sites we happen to pass by and visiting friends along the way, the only sight we plan to visit is Niagara Falls.

We've ordered an I - Pass to get us passed all the toll booths in the Chicago area and I'm told it will work on Ohio and PA tollway as well. I'm assuming I can use the Open Road lanes on the tollways without stopping. Do any of you have experience using I - Pass with RV'S? Any advice would be welcome.

Also I could use any info on sights to see and any routes I should avoid.
Thanks in advance.

When going to Niagara Falls a good idea would be leaving the 5er at a CG when going to the falls.

Don't know about I-Pass but we use EZ-Pass on the east coast and it knows when you have a trailer and charges accordingly. We use the express lane all the time.

Stay off of the turnpike, it is possibly the worst road in the US. My wife is originally from upstate NY, every time I have ventured to try the turnpike when going back there it is rough, broken up, and always under construction. I don't know why I ever expected it to change.

Also, you have to stop by Lake Ontario at some point. Alexandria Bay has some nice boat tours of the 1,000 islands and stops by Boldt Castle, very beautiful!

Corning has a very interesting glass museum....not just for kids. They also have a store with lots of cookware for ssle. Great place to pick up gifts.

Plan to take a day drive up and around the Finger Lakes. If you are up for a walk there are beautiful waterfalls....around Ithaca especially. Watkins Glen has an excellent hike with many consecutive waterfalls up a trail with steps along the way....just beautiful. Entrance is right in town.

Were planning a trip from Southern Indiana to Maine later this summer with a stop at Niagra Falls along the way. While planing the trip we wre advised to get reservations for our stop at the falls. We picked Branches of Niagra Campground, its close to the Falls and the sites arn't to exspensive, some of the other places looked pretty good but the reviews were questionable.

In New York you need a towing transponder, here is the form right from the NYS Ezpass web site.....

http://www.thruway.ny.gov/ezpass/ta-w68176.pdf

"If you are towing a car, trailer, camper or boat and want to use a dedicated E-ZPass lane to reduce your travel time you can get a special tag. The tag is programmed for the tow vehicle and trailer combination. The tag must only be used with the vehicle towing combination. You must first have established an E-ZPass account with the New York E-ZPass Customer Service Center. Complete the form below to request your special tag."
