East exit from Casino Queen, East St. Louis
Has anyone stayed at the Casino Queen RV Park and left via River Walk / Broadway to the east to catch I-70 eastbound? There are two rail bridges that look low on Google maps StreetView, and I was just wondering if 13.5' fiver could safely pass under them.
Thanks,
Ron

geo, Howdy;
Looks (from Goo-goo Earth), that I-70 & 64 are the neighbors
for the RV Park. If you want to avoid the hustle an bustle of trying to jump
onto the interstates right there you can go South or North on RT 3, it's a truck route
and I've been on it no low bridges. There is a large Grain elevator just to the South
of the Casino and the road is named for the grain co. so it's a safe bet that you'll have
plenty of head room.
Or you can call the Casino and ask them what they recommend, that's what I'd do.

Hankaye -
Thanks! It is actually the rail underpass bridges between the old Highway 3 and the casino campground I am asking about. And, as we both know, stick around long enough and things change. Highway 3 is now incorporated into I-64/I-70/I-55/US 40 - all those roads are now together on the overhead.
When I called, the sweet voice on the other end of the line didn't know and no one was around to ask. I know I can go across the Eads Bridge, so I may just check it myself. At least if I must back-track across the Eads Bridge, I'll be in downtown St. Louis and will be heading out of town against the traffic on a Monday morning!
MarkS - I remember visiting East St. Louis when Stan Musial still was a prime player for the Cardinals, and East St. Louis had its rough areas even then! To say that East St. Louis is a Free fire zone is casting quite a generality. I know areas in Denver that are worst than East St. Louis, but it doesn't stop me from visiting Denver. As a matter of fact, the campground at the Casino Queen is one of the best campgrounds within 50 miles of St. Louis and the area is quite safe. For this leg of our trip, St. Louis hits the "330 Rule", and the Casino Queen campground appears to be our choice for the night.

I used to live in STL, long time ago. My daughter lives there now. The general rule was to not go to East STL after dark. I had co-workers that came back with bullet holes in their car. I have not found a park in STL that I feel comfortable in.
Weed - Yep, Denver will be Detroit in a few years. Some of our counties are trying to start their own state. Probably showing my age, but I don't understand the country any more.

geo, Howdy;
When I used to haul Haz-mat I had to bail onto 3 from
I-70 and go South a few stop lights and duck past the trio of topless
establishments hop over the tracks and nap along the fence till
the gate at my receiver opened. After I was done I'd go back to where
the security tower for the topless joints and nap some more until 'Aunty
Qualcom' would have a new destination for me. Never had an incident.
That was during the late 90's and early 2000's.
Good luck!!!

You are a very brave, and lucky, man! I believe those "entertainment establishments" are still there . . . such a lovely area of town! That was off 3 and Monsanto, correct? The Casino Queen is about a mile north, right next to Eads Bridge and the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial . . . and the old Continental Grain terminal (now Cargill).

E st Louis is not the big bad monster its made out to be. Unless your looking for drugs or trouble and watch what's going on around you its no bigger threat then any other big city. The casino queen is a guarded lot and u are safe as long as u watch what u r doing . As far as the way u leave there is a lot of road construction in that area that's a worse problem then being in and around e st Louis . I laughed at the free fire zone comment . 9 times out of 10 its a drug deal went bad or someone thinks they didn't get the respect they should have lol thought respect was earned not just given. Have a safe trip geo go to idiot web site check for road construstion first.

Dave -
Thank you. Is the construction on the Interstate or surface roads - and I will check IDoT's website.

I've stayed at Casino Queen several times without incident. Depending on what time of day / evening you leave will control how much traffic you merge into. There are times when traffic is not that bad.
As for shootings, they happen in and around there, but that is true about anywhere nowadays.
If you are seeking alternatives, we've also stayed at Sundemeiers in St Charles and that is really nice. If the river is down, there is also a new place on 370 in St Peters that is clean and accessible where we've stayed.
