Bryce canyon via Utah 12 to Capitol Reef

Okay,
I am 'sorta' chicken....
and our friends want us to take route 12 toward Torry, UT to the Capital Reef nat'l monument.
My maps show about 10,000 in elevation at some points and
the route has 14% grades.
Now we've traveled far, no problems yet. But we have not driven over 7% grades.
Our friends dually has 4:56 gears and our F250 has only 3:73 gears and
it crawls up hills/mountains now - I can't see HOW we can do this drive.
Any thoughts?
oh yeah, forgot to say - we're leaving tomorrow!

Thumbs up Lifes an Adventure

Hey Jody, a friend of mine that got me into cross country motorcycle camping would always say (after we went through a snow storm, flash flood, hurricane type winds, or what ever) " Lifes an Adventure, go for it". Of course he was a Diabetic with a Heart condition so I'm sure that, that didn't play into his quote, but I have to say he was right. There should be plenty of warning signs if the road is not safe, but again this is the State that has no speed limit per say on it's remote roads. Have Fun!!!

Go for it and have fun. Just remember what ever gear you drive up with, use the same gear to go down the mountain with. Also use the exhaust brake on the truck to slow you down.

We did it and it was AWESOME !

I am so glad we did it.

After Bryce went to Capital Reef for 2 days and then
drycamping for 3 more days.

Now at a KOA in Richfield, UT for a few days then
off to visit friends in Colorado.

That question is coming up next.......

Haven't done the drive, but elevation is relative in Utah. You start out higher than most people live in the rest of the country because our valleys are often at 5 or 6,000 ft. Many canyon roads climb very quickly in elevation without being very noticeable.

It's a cakewalk. I say that comparing it to the Million $$$ Hwy from Silverton to Durango at 11 o'clock at night in a snow storm. Don't want to do that again. I've driven 12 several times in a couple of different vehicles. You won't have any problems except the Class As that have a little trouble on the grades.
When you get to the intersection at the end, turn left and go into Torrey. About a mile on the right there's a little cafe with a wonderful breakfast and the best coffee I've ever had. If you leave Capitol Reef on the way to Canyonlands, don't miss Valley of the Goblins State Park. It's an enchanting little place and has a short but interesting hike that goes down through the "goblins".

Old blog but good information. We may have to do that leg. Certainly want to visit Bryce again soon anyway.

Lightbulb

Still haven't gotten it into my head to look at the small numbers in the corner for the date of the blog.
But good to know you enjoyed your trip.

utah 12

drove this in in 2007 with a V-8 4 Runner towing a 17 ft camper on the way to the canyons. Very interesting. When we camped at the north rim of the Grand Canyon, a fellow camper told me that he read that the road will ruin your transmission. We had no trouble. Many white knuckle ridges. Many cyclists, out fitted for all the elements, both motorized and human powered. Most of all very remote for an easterner.
