Unhappy Government Shutdown

Just wondering if any forum members would like to share any camping experiences resulting from the government shutdown, ie: getting booted out of a campground, not able to find a place to camp, or disappointments due to park closures.

So many of our Oregon campgrounds are BLM and USFS. I was up the coast last week on business and it was sad to see all the gates locked and "closed" signs

At the beginning of the shutdown, Beekeeper submitted the following post in the Campground & Destinations section of the forum:

"We have reservations at a C of E campground for what could be our last camping outing of the year. Before I call them, does anyone know if this government "shutdown" will impact our plans? If so, we need to get busy and find a spot at a state facility.
Thanks in advance."

If you check out this thread, it obviously generated a large number of responses many of which resulted in members expressing their anger and frustration regarding the shutdown. The thread also turned political and was closed to further discussion in keeping with the forum's long-standing policy regarding keeping our discussions free of politics.

It appears as though this new thread is not only similar to Beekeeper's but also one in which you too are not happy with the shutdown and its effect on many of Oregon's federal campgrounds. In the previous thread, members had the opportunity to express their feelings or how they were impacted by the shutdown before the thread was closed.

It is hoped that this thread will not simply rehash what was said earlier and also to remind everyone about our policy regarding political statements in posts.

Thank you.

An LTVA update... The BLM has not yet ousted anyone, despite posting notices that everyone should had left within 48 hours of the shutdown. In fact, the population here has doubled since then, with none of the new arrivals able to buy their $180 stickers, as all the volunteers are also off-duty.

I did not know of the closed post, nor was it my intent to "rehash" said post. I also apologize if my post appears to have political undertones, and trust I did not offend anyone. I was simply curious of how campers were affected and the manner in which they coped. Please feel free to remove my post if it is not appropriate, and accept my apology.

Thanks.

White Mountain National Forest

We were roaming around the Park last Sunday and decided to stop at one of our favorite spots, Glen Ellis River Waterfalls. The parking lot was gated off with about 50 cars parked everywhere they could around it. We parked on the side of the road and walked in to see the falls. It had been raining for the past few days and the river was running real good, the view was awesome.

On the way back out we encountered a Park Ranger. He was standing in the middle of the trail with his hand on his hostered gun. With a very stern look on his face he asked why we were trespassing on government property. We told him that we'd been down to falls enjoying the view. To which he responded, "You'll have to leave those memories right hear, due to the Government Closure."

Then with a big grin on his face he said "just kidding". He went on to say it was unfortunate he had to lock the gates and the rest rooms because of this closures, but he was glad we got to see falls with the splendor of the autumn leaves.

Your post is both acceptable and appropriate --- it is "politics free" and I don't see how anyone could be offended by it. No need to apologize.
I was simply trying to avoid another "shutdown" discussion which could very well become political in a hurry. It seems that even the mention of the word "shutdown" lends itself to this kind of conversation. We've already had a fairly lengthy discussion about this topic in the previous thread started by Beekeeper. Perhaps you may have been away and did not get an opportunity to read the posts, to contribute or see our Moderator's (Hankpage)post in which the thread was closed.

In light of today's recent developments and progress being made in the talks, it looks like a solution may be reached soon. If that is the case, perhaps the shutdown will indeed be shut down and things will get back to normal and we can talk about RVing again.

We had reservations this weekend at Chickasaw National Rec Area. It is still closed, but we found a nice little campground nearby and spent some time at the Chickasaw Cultural Center, near Sulphur, OK. So it turned into a good thing cause we probably would have overlooked that little campground otherwise.

With the shut down of the national campgrounds I think it has a bright side for the small privately owned campgrounds that a lot of campers wouldn't know about if the shut down never happened. Just maybe you'll find the best campground ever

Hmmm the Shutdown that shutdown which isn't now shutdown or maybe it is shutdown (who the heck knows) at Pictured Rocks National Seashore in Munising, MI still has the gates closed and barricaded, but local citizens are removing the barricades every morning and the park rangers are not stopping visitors who enter the park to view the rock formations along the Lake Superior coastline and/or the colors changing in the area. It's a remarkable sight for any who haven't seen it and with the "whatever shutdown it is" in effect, there's much less crowding than in years past.

If you haven't experienced the UP in fall, it's a bit late for this year's color burst, but next year, the end of September through mid October, you might want to consider a trip if you're somewhere in the area.

I agree. There's always a bright side to every situation.

I was surprised, yesterday, when I stopped to check out a state park adjacent to a National Forest and National Dunes Recreation area. I would have thought the park would be busy. There were, maybe, half a dozen campers. Talking with the hosts, they said they haven't had more than the usual activity. But, it might just be the timing. It's hunting season in Oregon, so many campers are off hunting, usually in Eastern Oregon.

Looks like Oregon is in for at least a week of good weather. I'm getting the urge to get out there, but can't seem to pull the DH away from building our new RV shelter. Hopefully he'll be finished by the end of the week and we can take advantage of our "Indian Summer". My kayak is getting dusty

Until December (assuming the polar package/artic package holds out as long as the continuing resolution)

I am glad that places are open and folks are back to work. Thats really is great news. Now could we find out WHO really caused the shut down in Washington and shut them down or send home without a check.
