Brake shoes pitted

Doing bearing pack and discovered large chunks missing from my brake shoes. Also appears to be metal flecks embedded in the shoe, but can't locate the source unless it's flaking off the magnet. Has anyone encountered this before?
Any suggestions?

What does that drum look like?? Those grooves came from something. I've seen chunks break off in the past but many decades ago when I let brake shoes get too thin then pieces would break off; those look pretty thick for that, they look more like gouges from a foreign object or something. Maybe someone else can shed more light.

Danny, scoring not too bad. Been driving 58 years and have done all my own vehicle brake work over the years. In my 20's I'd put new shoes on my car with much worse scoring than these have. Where I grew up it was cheaper and easier to put on new shoes than try to get the drums turned to eliminate a little scoring.

From your pic the magnet .. as you surmise doesn’t appear to be causing what I see on those shoes... new brake shoes all around for sure if it were mine... check magnet with straightedge ruler ..

If within spec and no damaged hardware I’d continue with magnets and such.

You will generally find that you can replace the entire backing plate brake assembly, which gives you new shoes along with new magnets and all new hardware, for the same or less than replacing just the shoes.

Now would be a great time to upgrade to self adjusting brakes.
