Just curious what brand and type of oil do you use for your Onan 5500?

My thought also
I have not used my generator since I purchased my fuzion 301 and its 2 years old and I would like to change the oil in it but don't know what is recommended.

Shell Rotella T6 synthetic 5w-40. (blue bottle or jug) Good protection against oil shear and high temps.
Any 5w-30 synthetic would work.

Any reputable brand is fine. Changing the oil and filter on the schedule and running the genset regularly as specified in the manual are way more important than the brand of oil.
The maintenance guy at the local Onan service center said that a big part of his business is replacing carburetors on RV gensets that are gummed up due to stale fuel.

good luck if it hasn't ran in 2 years.  It needs stabilized fuel & ran with a load once a month. You most likely will need a new carb. The one on my 4K was $280.00 carry out price @ Cummins. When you get it going keep some Seafoam in it.

synthetic or not?
I have a Onan 4K (gas) circa 2010. I run it about 1 hour under load every 3-4 weeks. Winter time is approaching and I'm in the northeast. Temps can get to below 0 occcassionally and I'm always nervous when I crank the think at those temps.
I've been following the maintenance guide re: oil, but it doesn't mention the use of synthetic.
I've been considering synthetic for use durig the cold weather now that the generator is broken in with about 200 hours total on it.
Since the man. warranty is about done and the RV dealer's warranty finished up this year, I'm thinking that I want to move to synthetic.
Any one have any real-world experience with this?

I run this 5w-40 in all my small engines. I'm obviously biased toward Shell products, but a quality 5w-40 synthetic would be appropriate, especially cold-hot temps.

I run Amsoil SAE30 generator oil and I had 400 hours on my last Onan with no problems and my oil analysts reports always came back good

OOf... For $280 for a small carb like that, I'm interested in rebuilding.. :-)
Or drain it (the carb) if you're going to have it sit up for that long.
