Hot water heater

Just got back from a great long week end ,the only 2 problems were, first off the hot water heater wouldnt come on with electric switch it felt tight on the switch then made a noise now switch rocks back and forth freely is the switch bad,has anyone had this problem?the hot water heater works fine on lp gas though.and the second problem well man made (by me )I was cleaning the toilet and the fancy cleaning brush that DW got came apart and the big brush head fell thru the gate valve opening but I got lucky that it was just alittle bit bigger than the flange pipe that goes to the tank still it was about a foot away from me reaching it had to go to lowes and buy one of those long flexable jaw clap things to reach it and pull it to the top and grab it with the big pliers ,Got lucky on that one Sorry so long.

If the switch moves back and forth "freely" and without any resistance, it probably needs to be replaced. Is this an interior, wall-mounted switch or an external, tank-mounted one?

Crash,

The switch is very easy to replace, it is held in place by two tension arms, one on top and one on bottom. You can see a picture of the switch at this link. Simply use a pocket knife or thin blade screwdriver, pry the top part of the switch out and the rest will follow. There are two electrical connections on the back, then just pop the new switch in place. Total time, maybe 10 minutes. It will take much longer to get the part number and go get the switch... LOL

I'd check with a flash light and a mirror while you have the switch out, there's a reason it failed, probably from corrosion on the spring loaded rocker inside the switch. Check carefully to make sure your tank isn't leaking into that area, that could be a reason for the corrosion and switch failure. Then again, it could just be a bad switch, but I'd look to be sure.

Good Luck
