Torque wrench for $9.99 at HFT

I purchased this torque wrench at Harbor Freight Tools for $19.99 a while back to check the torque on my trailer's lug nuts before every trip. I thought it was a reasonable price then but this torque wrench is now on sale for $9.99 and is worth considering if you don't have one.

It has a 1/2 inch drive and I keep it in its hard plastic case in my Travel Trailer toolbox. Haven't had an issue with it and found a few loose nuts.

Thanks for posting, 2 reasons, I have had one about 2 years now, works great, good price. Also, I forgot to recheck the lugs after pulling wheels off and drove about 25 miles to/back from camp trip last week. So I went out and checked the trailer. I found 3 out of 24 lugs needed alittle more tighting. Sad story I finally got one after a coworker lost a wheel and cost about 4800 in fix/repairs and 2 days at the repair place. He used a star wrench as I used to before that story.

Decent wrench. I just used mine today. One or two nuts on each wheel needed a bit of tightening. Totally worth the $20. At $10, now there's no excuse to not have one.

At $20 there's no reason not to have one.

I am a happy owner also. Hot Rod magazine a while back did a test story on torque wrenchs in 1/2" drive and yes HFT came in first place over all the big names. Makes me a happy camper.

Just remember to store it while it's turned to 0. Other wise it can lose calibration by settling the springs.

I have an older HF 1/2 drive torque wrench that you can calibrate. And a newer 3/8 drive that cannot be calibrated. I checked the calibration at work of the new 3/8 drive and here are the results.

In foot pounds
Set point Actual
25. 15
50. 42
75. 69

Not sure if the newer half inch drives can be calabrated like the older ones or not. If they are they have an allen screw down on the side by the handle. Not the most accurate but knowing the real values I can compensate. The 1/2 drive I calibrated correctly. If you can torque wrenches should be calibrated annually.

The Harbor Freight seems to have 10 as its lowest setting, so that's where I leave it.

Fixjet, thanks for the calibration tip. I'll have to check mine.

Just bought one two weeks ago at HF. We purchased a new Ram and had a B&W Companion hitch installed. it has a single bolt that holds the hitch and when reinstalling it, it has to be tightened to 80 lbs/ft. I thought it would get used maybe twice a year as I leave the hitch in most of the time. So while I don't mind spending money for a decent tool I wasn't looking forward to the $70+ I was seeing at other stores. Now I realize I can also use it to check the lugs which I should be doing regularly. Question: how do I know what the right setting is for lugs?

So, I went HFT this morning and purchased the Torque wrench, works fine. I do have one question. In reading Keystone owners manual it reads to torque lug nuts to 110-120 on all units except for Cambridge, which requires 140-150 ft/lbs. I don't claim to be a mechanic but I do know how to use a torque wrench. Maybe there is one of you out there that can explain to me what is meant by Cambridge.

Povo,

You can do a "torque" search in this forum or at the Keystone site and find the correct torque settings documentation (tutorials, videos, etc.) for your wheels' lug nuts.

Regards,

The Cambridge is a model in the Keystone line of RV's... The reason the torque is different on the Cambridge is because it has a different size lug. It's explained in great detail in your owner's manual. The torqueing of wheels is a 3 step process IF the wheels have been removed. It is a 1 step process if you are rechecking the wheels which have been previously torqued per the instructions.

I had also picked one of these torque wrenches up at HF. I also picked up a socket set for all the common lug sizes. Now I can do my 5er, utility trailer, TV and help anyone else that might need one.

Or the lowest setting. My Kobalt starts at 50 ft lbs and it says to store there.

Yes, it was a weekend deal only. Still, for $22 you can't go wrong. I wouldn't wait. I signed up to their distribution list to get coupons and notifications. That's how I found out.
