I have been getting flu shots for quite a few years and this year the flu shot kicked my tail for a day or so and made my arm hurt; found out that there is a special super dose shot for geezers... never had any reaction the flu shots in the past. I got a little fever, felt a bit poorly and my arm hurt. Guess it is better than a week or two of flu.

I got my senior special flu shot and my second pneumonia shot at the same time in different arms. I haven't felt that dizzy since the 60's. All kidding aside, it got a little scary for a while. So bad I even let the DW drive home.

First off, it'll be a couple months before my slack season starts, and a lot can happen in a couple months. Coronavirus may be old news by then (or it may have caused the zombie apocalypse, who knows?) Time will tell.

Second, short of the Nautilus, Kon-Tiki, or Victoria, RVing is probably the least crowd-intensive mode of travel I can imagine. Other than restaurants/groceries, gas stations, and camp check-in offices, you have nearly zero exposure. You travel in your own bubble, you sleep in your own bubble. Now, I might rethink our plan to partake of the hot springs in Thermopolis, but then again, I may not.

Morning national news showed total reported cases and total deaths so far. I did some quick math in my head at the time, but had just woke up, so I can't vouch for them...

The WHO has estimated of around a 2% mortality rate for coronavirus, on par with most virals.

There are two main factors making it worse than the average flu in China (thus giving it so much media coverage):

A 14 day incubation period which significantly increases exposure risks.

The mortality rate significantly increases with elderly (over 70-80 yr old) smokers, of which China has a large collection. Something like 60-70% of their population smokes.

Had a similar experience. Never felt a reaction in the past. This year's "senior" dose must have been way potent or perhaps it was the Prevnar 13 booster. Either way I felt bad for about a day. Reminded me of the shots we used to get before heading overseas. Those used to have me in my rack for 12 hours or so. Still better than actually coming down with the flu

Guess I was lucky. Had to sign the paper that said the senior dose could cause all those reactions, but other than a couple hours of being able to feel the sore spot where the injection had been, had no other problem.

Both DW and I had the senior dose this year. We had no problems and have not had the flu.

Same thing here. Only a tiny bit of tightness in the shoulder that lasted only a few hrs. I have never had a reaction in all the years that I've been getting it.

Y'all had the new and improved 2nd edition shingles shot? We've been dragging ourselves around like sick puppies since last Thursday.

We always go camping and fishing so no changes planned here. I think flying is on hold though.
18000 Americans died of flu related illnesses in the last year of which there was 30 million cases in the US alone.

Still not as effective as a well placed meteor.

Shingles? I got my shot just at 60 years old. Not much of a reaction. A year later they came out with the new and better 2 doze shingles shots. June I had got the 1st shot and was sick most of that all night. Wife also, her arm hurt for several weeks, mine not as long. That was the worse reaction I have ever had and I get flu shots every year, maybe last 30 years. I was not looking forward to the 2nd in Dec, but it was not bad at all.

Well, the CDC, as of the 29th, claimed 22 cases in the US (has risen since then) and 1 confirmed death. (Also has risen to 2) So by the numbers. 1 in 22 have died. Regular flu: 1 in 785. Now these numbers worldwide right at the moment for Corona are 1 in 33. (I am selling my Corona beer stock first thing this AM) So I do believe it is worse than a common flu. Wash hands often, don't touch face without washing, (Oh,oh I feel a nose itch) but it will be interesting to see how this goes. Cannot believe the incredible numbers of rude people I observe who do not cover their mouths when they sneeze or cough. I have a chronic cough (too many years in front of a coal forge) so I expect folks will soon be giving me a wide birth and I will just be able to go to the front of the line. I wish good health to all of you.
So far, no change in plans for DW and myself. But I do think we will see a major drop in Dog Show participation numbers.
John: I am trying to find my Anti-Virus disc. I think that will be the best protection!

OH, my numbers for my math were from the CDC as of Feb 29th, Johns numbers from the CDC for 2016-2017 flu season and my local news station who quoted 88,000 cases reported in China and 2,900 fatalities. (They wouldn't quote bogus numbers would they?)

Yup, those are the numbers I saw the other morning, so 3.3% mortality rate. In my experience, China reports numbers that will provide them an advantage of some sort and always cooks the books.

Use liberally on everything you touch, ingest or breathe. Use it on your toothbrush!
