5th wheel chucking
Can you ever eliminate completely chucking when pulling a 5th wheel?

About the only way I have found is to replace the pin box with one of the air ride types. The one i used was called "5th Air Borne".

On a slider hitch, some of the "chucking" seems to be actual flex is in the compressible slide material, etc.

Eliminate, no. You can make it almost unnoticeable with different pin boxes. There's a reason people pay the extra money for them. One of the RV mods that actually works!

If you have enough money there is also air suspension style hitches for the truck bed. Those that have it love it.

We use the Anderson Ultimate hitch. No Chucking. May be a lower cost replacement alternative. http://www.andersenhitches.com/catal...eel-connection

You may also want to make sure you have enough pin weight on the truck. Some of the newer trucks are so high and cause a nose up towing condition. It will add to the chucking.

I've towed my 5er with both a B&W and an Andersen and it tows exactly the same. Some chucking on rougher roads.

Started out with the Anderson. But, since it is ball and socket configuration it really has no "slop" so it really can't "chuck". Been on all kinds of roads in the past year including some well worn gravel stretches and have not noticed any of the chucking problems our traveling partners complained of. None of those traveling with us had the air ride type hitches.

Chucking in my opinion is mainly do to the trailer wheels and the truck wheels being out of sync on rough roads or on freeways like expansion joints. This causes the trailer to move forwards and backwards against what the truck movement is doing. It has more to do with distance between the truck wheels and the trailer wheels. The hitch will add to the movement if there is slack in the latch. I use the Mor-Ryde to prevent chucking on my trailer. Jay

I absolutely agree. There are Highways in northern Ohio that are concrete with expansion joints and I dont care what you got as a hitch, truck, pin box, you are going to have chucking. I have a rubberized pin box and its smooth as long as I am not on those kinds of roads. Have airbags too...no difference.

I agree that slop in the hitch is just that, slop in the hitch (which should be repaired/fixed). To me "chucking" is what is described as above, the constant push-pull feeling that causes an uncomfortable ride to the passengers (watch the Morryde RPB video on YouTube to see what I mean). It appears to vary depending on road conditions as well as attitude of the truck and 5th wheel. For instance I have noticed I rarely feel "chucking" going up a steep incline but often will feel "chucking" while coming down a steep incline. I changed to a Morryde RPB with an Andersen Hitch but I am still not satisfied. I have tried shifting the 5th wheel load to a higher pin weight and also a lower pin weight, air bags on the truck and shocks on the trailer. I am open to any other suggestions to try to reduce "chucking" to an acceptable level.

When we started out, our first hitch was a Reese 16K and chucking was pretty bad. When we got the new truck with the Curt made for it, have not had a bit of problem.

We tow a 36 foot Alpine with our GMC duramax 2500 club cab. I find by adding a bit more air in my firestone air bags, depending on road conditions it takes all the chucking away. Also I replaced my stock shocks with Monroe gas magnum and it really smoothed things out even more. Hitch used is Husky 16K slider.

This whole thread is pointless unless we can all agree on what "chucking" means. When I was in college it was what we all did on Friday night over the toilet
Are we talking about slop in the hitch where the king pin is rattling? Or bouncing over uneven roads? Or just the rythmic push/pull that happens between the truck and 5th?
The first I'd agree is a problem with equipment and the hitch can make a difference. The last two, Sir Isaac Newton and his laws win, regardless of the hitch. I'll concede various things can help cushion the "blow" of a 5th pushing on a truck but there's a certain amount of physics that just can't be overcome no matter what the equipment.

Exactly, but we can somewhat reduce it by making trailer and truck inline and parallel with road.
