Towing with a Toyota Tacoma

We will be pulling a Bullet 246RBS with our 2007 Tacoma, it has the tow package, says up to 6500 lbs. I was just wondering, our dry weight on the trailer is about 4800, does this sound like it will work? Thanks for any advice.

Yup, the manual says you can pull 6,500 Lbs. with a Tacoma. What the manual doesn't say is that you won't be pulling it very fast (or very far without re-fueling every 100 miles). I'm pulling a 22' Keystone Passport (dry weight - 3,500 Lbs.) with a 2011 Tacoma, V-6, towing package. At 60 MPH, level, on the interstate, in 4th gear, the Tacoma is near maxed out on power. On an upslope, the Tacoma is pretty much maxed out on power at 45 MPH. Expect fuel mileage at 10 MPG, or less.

I tow a 4200 lbs trailer with a Nissan Xterra V6 4.0L auto transmission. On a flat road I can get up to 70 or 75 no problem and the engine revs at 3800, on a slope the revs go up to 4500 and it maintains the speed at 58. The Xterra is rated at 500/5000 tongue/weight respectively. The same engine/tranny combination in the frontier can pull up to 6500 lbs... MPG is at 9.3.

What is the payload of the truck and tongue weight of the trailer. Not sure why one would want to tow at 75 mph.

Guide to Towing via Trailer Life

First add max weight of your truck with max weight of trailer and compare to the GCWR or Groos Combined Weight Rating of your truck. If the total weight of truck and trailer at full load is over the rated combined rating for the truck, go for a larger, more powerful truck.

Example: My Tundra has a GCWR of 14,000, Truck GVWR is 6,700, Trailer GVWR is 7,200 or 13,900, the truck is under its GCWR.

GCWR of 14,000 less GVWR 6,700 is 7,300 or Effective Max towing capasity.

GCWR of 14,000 less the actual rolling weight of the truck, 5,800 yeilds a tow ability of 8,200 pounds.

In actual usage my truck accelerates up steep hills towing abut 6,500 lb TT. My MPG towing is 11.4.

I do not tow at 75, but did one test. I tow between 60-65 on flat-roads with non-windy conditions...

New Tundra

Thanks for all the good info. We just traded our Tacoma in for a new Tundra 5.7 liter with Tow package. I feel better about it. My husband will be doing all the driving, but I was dreading wondering if we would be able to climb a hill. We pick up our trailer tomorrow. Pretty excited

I think you made a good choice!! I think the 246RBS is a good match for my F150 so I think you'll be much happier with the Tundra towing it!! Happy Camping and post some pics once you get it!

Thanks Corbin! I will post pictures maybe tomorrow after we pick it up. Getting pretty excited. I have actually never stayed at a lake and camped in an RV before. We are not even sure of where we are going first, taking a mini trip this weekend though.
