Tire tilt?

This is our first trailer and when I was out practicing in an empty parking lot with cones I noticed the front tire tilt forward at the top. I was backing up and trying to curve into a spot when it happened and each time. It seemed like the tighter the turn the more tilt. The lug nuts are tight. Is this normal?? It is a 2017 Hideout 26rls. Thanks

When your on pavement, the tighter you turn the more the tires will "distort ", it's normal.

Thanks! I was worried something was wrong. I was on pavement. Is the tilt less on gravel?

On gravel the tires can "scrub" the ground easier so it will be significantly less. You should see the tires on the trailers we move with a forklift, you'd think the tire was going to pop off the rim.

I've been "practicing" since '89, and unless you do it on a regular (daily) basis it may take a time or two. Keep at it, relax and it will get easier.

The first time I ever paid attention to it I was pulled into a gas station. I did my usual walk around and immediately saw my tires/axles at some crazy angle. I thought I had bent an axle while traveling or a wheel was coming loose or ...?? Not to worry. They just get looking crazy when being turned.

Not to worry!! I see it all the time because I'm the one that directs the backing, or watches while we pullout. Our does a full backwards U turn to get into its spot at our house. We have only done it a couple of time and can hit it on the first try now.

The first time I noticed this was with a triple axle rig, many years ago. It is simple physics at work, but quite disconcerting the first time you see it.

When I'm done "positioning", I always pull straight ahead several feet, then back straight in. This will take the side stress off of the tire's sidewalls.

Good Luck,

PRACTICE...PRACTICE...PRACTICE... Good Job!

It is a learned exercise, isn't it? Keep at it and it will be second nature in no time. Water filled milk jugs make a cheap practice course. You can even add a little food coloring at first.

Good Luck,

OK well done! Your next challenge is to back up a "B" train.

Well considering I don't know what a "B" train is, I'll probably pass! Lol!

It's too bad the forum doesn't have a section for "newbees" to ask all those simple silly questions. For those basic questions for those who have never gone trailering. Even the terminology can be a lot.

Hey Cheryl. A "B" train is those 53' double trailers you see going up and down Hwy 2. Usually Petersen Transport. Just kidding almost impossible to back up.

Cheryl,

Ask your questions (none are silly) in the area of the forum you think it's most appropriate. So far, we haven't started a "newbee" section because the questions asked are usually ones that would benefit even some "old timers"... We all need a "gentle reminder" every now and then, and having your questions in an area related to the subject exposes them to even those who would "never read a newbee post"....

No worries. No such thing as a "simple silly" question. When something arises, you ask, and hopefully someone will have the answer. Along the way it's entirely possible that you encounter something that even a long time RVr might not have seen. As you learn and experience you can then share with others. Ask away, we are more than happy to help.....and even like the questions
