The fueling adventures are by far my least favorite part about this hobby ( even more so than the black tank) and really zap the the energy of both the DW and I.
Use Pilot/Flying J type locations when traveling. They are designed for easy on off for truckers, most have dedicated RV islands designed for easier maneuvering. You may pay a few cents more, but the ease of mind is worth it. You can also get a Good Sam RV card from Pilot/Flying J that will get you a 5-8 cent discount. When it gets right down to it, even if you were on a long trip, say 1600 miles, at a typical 8 mpg with a gasser, you would use 200 gallons. If you paid 10 cents per gallon more at a truck stop with RV islands it would cost you $20 for the trip. I'm willing to pay $20 over 6-7 fill ups (roughly $3 each) for convenience. Additionally, you can go on their website ahead of time, check their locations and prices, and plan your trip and calculate fuel costs pretty accurately right from your living room.

^^^Risk mitigation may cost a bit more, but improves karma and mental well being.

I use Pilot and Flying J as much as possible as in/out will be fast and easy. Often they are priced the same as truck stops at the intersection. Service stations can be another matter. Recently, with my GS discount Pilot was $0.29 a gallon higher on diesel than the 2 stations directly across the street. It made no difference as it would be impossible to get in/out either of those without dropping the 5er. I only needed 20++ gallons so it made little difference especially for the convenience. The thing that did bother was it was the fuel was labeled B20, that garbage costs more in mileage. I avoid putting garbage in the tank as much as possible.
We get between 11 and 12 MPG and pull 6000 - 7500 annually. Still not much as when the 5er is not connected I can choose.

We remember that day as well! Fun being able to chat in person. We hope to cross paths again in a more relaxed setting, and share some RV and traveling stories!

We do an annual trip that has two days out and two days back of 1000 miles each year, but it's a known butt-burner and our stops are planned in advance. Denver to Oshkosh, WI.

But keep in mind that stuff happens. This year on the return trip I-80 was essentially closed for almost 20 miles for a fatal car/big rig accident, the rig driver was arrested for aggressive driving and the family of five in the car were all killed.

We definitely plan our trips around the RV islands at the Pilots/Flying Js - it does help, but they aren't as prevalent as I'd like.

Their app is pretty handy as well as you can plug in a destination and it maps the locations along the route.
