I found that my diesel 5 gal spout was missing. That was when I found the new style spouts and the high costs. I just purchased another blue water 5 gal container with the older style spout(since that is what they have) for about 15 bucks and put that spout onto the diesel container. Having several 5 gal water containers and 1 without a spout is no big deal, I only pour 1 at a time.

There is a "retrofit" conversion spout available to replace the "new style" with the old style spout. The kit even has the "vent hole/cap" so you can convert your "new style spillable" cans to the "old style/workable" cans.

Here's one source, but they are available from a number of places including Amazon and EBay. I'm sure they "aren't legal everywhere" although most states probably have a "grandfather clause" for old cans..........

Here's the company website: http://ezpourspout.com/

I purchased that kit a few years ago and is worth the money. I installed the kit on my 5 gallon spare diesel can and it works fine. The vent is priceless.

So far I have never used the spare can in earnest, but every year I dump the five gallons into the tank to keep the diesel fresh just in case I do need it. Works as advertised.

Planning an extended trip into Canada and Alaska. We do plan on towing to some of the more remote areas so definitely will be carrying at least 2 and probably 3 5 gallon cans. From what I've heard, a station that is advertised sometimes is not in service. Thinking better safe than sorry. Doubt Good Sams would give real fast service in the middle of nowhere. Especially if no cell service which I've also heard is quite sparse. Definitely will have them secured well though. Glad though that someone mentioned a funnel that will be small enough. Would lend insult to injury if it wouldn't fit. Lol Thanks

Amazon sales an older style 5 gallon Jerry can for a reasonable price.

I have a number of those. They do work great, and they don't leak. Illegal in Kalifornia, though.

I'm pretty certain my F150 has a 26 gallon tank. I go to WV a lot from Virginia Beach VA and have never had a problem on the by-roads of WV running out of gas. Last trip we took was from Hollister NC to Mt Airy NC all back roads (158 and a few other lesser paths). . . averaged 9.5MPG and never had a thought running low on fuel, we just mostly tried to do a fuel stop before gauge got to 1/4 empty.

I also use the DeLorme Topo North America road atlas computer mapping program to plot my trips, it's a great tool for figuring out good routes, projected refueling, and breaks. The program is excellent I think for towing, and once you add your preferences a trustful no brainer

Good luck on what you decide to do

I bought one in Buccees...a Texas store...don't ever pass one up...too cool place. Anyway..I got the round one. Mistake. Not enough handles on that thing. Been in the barn for 3-4 years. Get a square one I guess. Or one that has a handle.

We are planning a trip from Pa. to New Orleans this coming spring and don't want to be stopping every couple of hours for fuel.

Thank you.
Probably off topic but isn't it sad that in the USA somebody has to worry about the legality of carrying a couple jerry cans of gas in the back of his truck?!

FYI, after Johns post about retro fitting old style cans with old style nozzles. I ordered 2. They fit midwest and blitz plastic containers and have about a 9 inch flex nozzle.

There is also an "anti-siphon gadget" deeper inside that "capless gas cap" that prevents someone from "stealing your gas".... That "red funnel" is the only way you can get a 5 gallon gas can plastic nozzle deep enough into the "capless gas cap" to open both of the "trap doors"....

It's not as complicated as my description makes it seem, but without that red funnel, you can't get gas to flow into the tank because both trap doors won't open..... The funnel is about 10" long, about 5/8" on the little end and about 2.5" on the big end. That's not a lot of space to "pour (spill) fuel" for it to flow from a 5 gallon can and end up inside the truck's tank conveniently. It'll work in an emergency, but it's not convenient enough to use for "roadside refueling"......
I'm a Ford tech, do you know how many "check engine" lights were due to loose or lost gas caps? I'll bet I've seen hundreds. I do very few since the introduction of these caps.

I'm my own tech (Dodge, Volvo, Chevy, etc. Do you know how many check engine lights I've had due to the old-style gas caps? None. And I don't need a special funnel.

The dumbing down of America continues...

Same here, and it works exceptionally well for me.

I bought one of these no spill gas cans and the extension spout for it.

I like to have the gas, for the generator and in case of emergency.

After the trip I pour what is left into the truck's tank, so I can fill the can with fresh fuel for the next trip and have had zero issues doing so.

The can seals tightly, no leaks, fumes or smells, but, I did cut the child proof thingy off of it and agree with "dumb down" comment... pandering to the lowest common denominator
