When we built our current home, we installed our water softener and permanent filter. We bought a water conditioning system, a water softener and a self cleaning permanent filter. The instructions that came with the filter said to install it AFTER the water softener. The reasoning is to allow the softener to "condition the water" and remove the large contaminates, then use the filter to remove any remaining contaminants as well as the majority of the sodium left from the softening process.
These are whirlpool products, but I'd imagine the "plumbing theory" would be the same regardless of brand or application (RV or S&B)
