Mouldings and Slideout

The side trim molding on my Cougar seems to be interfering with my slideout closing correctly and I think it could also be a problem with sealing well against the side of the camper. The side molding on my camper goes in behind the edge of the slideout and in my mind should be trimmed right to the edge of the slideout. Anybody have any advice on this before I get out the hardware knife and start cutting? Here is a photo showing what I am talking about.

It is holding the bottom of the slideout out from the camper wall the width of the molding and the rubber seal is crushed flat and leaves a gap above and below the molding. Not a big deal if it gets water behind there since this is all outside the camper but this leaves my whole slideout cocked out at the bottom and puts extra strain on the side panels that lap over and seal the slideout to the wall.
