Smile Problems

Show me a man made item with no problems and I'll show you a salesman that seen you coming!
Just be dilagent when you inspect it and if your really worried hire a professional inspector or surveyor like they do when you buy a large boat.

Smile First timers at 5th wheeling

Trying to decide what size camper to buy for the two of us to start
out with.. We like the cougar 29 res. But wondering if its too much for us. The ford 150 crew cab 5 1/2 box is our choice for a truck.
Share you thoughts. We will travel east to west coast.

HI,
There are several smaller 5er's that 1/2 ton truck can pull you will need to watch your gross rear axle weight and the combined gross vehicle weight. These weights are what your truck can safely pull and have been established by the manufacture. I would look on the driver side truck door B pillar that will have the weight placard on it. This will list your maximum weights that the truck can safely handle.
Cougar has four models of Xlite 5er's that you could buy ranging from the 26SAB to the 29RES, as you know. The 29RES has a pin weight at 15% of 1486 Lbs and or at 20% it is 1982 Lbs. This is the weight that will be transfered to the rear axle and will be supported by your rear axle and tires. Most of us used the 20% pin weight, when we look at the load that is placed on your rear axle and tires.
Only you can determine what 5er you want to pull safely.
Good luck in your search

Flying duchman, Another thing is that most hitches are made for a minimum 6½ ft. bed because the load should be centered about 2 inches in front of the rear axle. You may have a problem finding a hitch for that short a bed.

I agree with Hank's comment about the 5 1/2 ft box that you are looking at on the Ford 150. Unless this is a typo, you would be very hard-pressed to pull a 5th wheel with a hitch sitting in a box that short. Why would you be considering a box that short - unless you plan on pulling a trailer?
