Fule Milage

Wanted to see what kind of milage others may getting while pulling a Cougar 327RES with a 2006 Dodge Mega Cab with 5.7 L diesel? What have you done to the vehicles to improve the milage?

Thanks, new 327RES owner.

Do you have the 5.7 Hemi or the 5.9 diesel?

Your trailer is pretty close in weight to my 324. I was getting about 11.5 mpg pulling my trailer with a 6.7 Megacab 4wd (emissions deleted).

You can improve mileage by increasing air flow in (intake, air filter) and out (free flowing exhaust) to help with efficiency. Small increases in power from tuners or programmers can give you mileage gains.
Running synthetic oil can also help.

The best mileage improvements can be found with driving habits. Driving with a light pedal, using cruise control, and maintaining a steady speed whenever possible. Its hard to find much improvement when you have a 13' tall, 14K lb brick shaped object in tow.

I have found that the biggest effect on my fuel mileage is head-wind and my right foot. (not necessarily in that order) We take the same 1250 mile trip every year and I have gotten from mid 13s to upper 16s mpg. My mileage and power has been so good that I am afraid to mess with a good thing. The only mod I made was to remove restrictions from engine air intake. If I were you I would wait and see what changes in driving habits does to mpg so you have a baseline to compare to if you decide to make mods. JM2¢, Hank ................ forgot to mention I have 3:73 rear

Mileage

I have been getting around 11.5-12 pulling my 318SAB with my 2006 Ram Cummins dually with auto trans. I try to cruise at 55-58 mph. I get more (13) on interstates.

Driving while not towing is roughly 17-18.

Hi there your milage will vary depending on terrain and right foot!!! You can see in the signature what i tow with. it is unmodified.except for exhaust and a K&N air filter I generaly get 15 to17 mpg when towing and 60mph is the max speed. Truck gets 20mpg on my daily commute! my 96 volvo wagon only gets 23mpg go figure. Drive safe and smooth and enjoy the road

If gas mileage were a consideration I wouldn't leave the house. Still I can get around 11 with my cummins pulling a 14k 35 footer if i pay attention to speed (which I hate to do).

As low as 8 mpg (when the Dmax is doing it's enviro thing) but usually around 10-11. Cruise control set at 70. Hey, I want to get there.... OK, I can get 15 but then I have to do this......

That is about what I got towing my 2005 250 miles home from Burlington, WA to Portland, OR. Tow speeds between 60 and 70 usually about 60 to 65. Filled just after picking the unit up, and filled just after dropping at the house, hand calculated 11.8, not too bad.

12 mpg 2008 F-250 4X4 6.4 L STOCK pulling a 2012 res 327 tow haul and foot control control 90% of the milage. I agree if I was worried about mpg I would never leave the house.

Fuel mileage between vehicles can never be duplicated by other drivers. My wife and I get totally different fuel mileage driving the same vehicle. Driving habits alone will affect fuel mileage such as: how fast do you take off from a light, how fast do you drive when towing, 55 to 60 is best for fuel mileage.
Now the truck comes into play this too will affect fuel mileage. What is the differential ratio 3:73 or 4:10, is the truck an auto or stick? What size tires do you have on the truck stock, oversize highway tread design or mudders? Is the truck lifted or stock height? Do you have a programmer and aftermarket components on the truck?
All of these items will affect your fuel mileage so it is very difficult to compare what your mileage should be, just drive the truck and do not worry, be happy.

I like the Fishing Story theory. From what I've read it fits perfectly. I really like the folks getting 18 to 20 MPG pulling a 16000 Lb Toy Hauler at 75 MPH with their 10 year old 3/4 ton TV through the mountains with a 30 MPH head wind.

But they said they were using the accellerator (to feather the fuel consumption) rather than the cruise control, so with a "calculated foot" maybe they are getting 20 MPG, but certainly not 21MPG <wink>

As for me, with my 7200 lb trailer behind my F150 with a 5.4L gas engine and 6 speed transmission, I'm lucky to get 12 towing, usually more like 11MPG. when I had Ford diesels (one naturally aspirated and one turbocharged) solo I was doing good to get 16 and towing, well, almost the same as I'm getting with this F150 and my current RV. And, yes, I love to fish

Most people use the overhead to quote mileage from and in most cases this is not accurate.Sometimes it is close , sometimes it is far from it.

Not using cruise will net you 1-1.5mpg increase if you are paying attention in hilly terrain. SPEED is the biggest factor determining fuel mileage as well as HEADWIND. Anything over 60mph is going to cost you exponentially in fuel, so its up to you how fast you need to get there.
