What is today?
Y'all know what today is right?
Yes, it is SAN JACINTO DAY.
Texas won the Battle of San Jacinto and became the Republic of Texas.
Thank you 4th great grandfather James Cole III and 2nd cousin David Miles Cole.

If things keep going the way the way they are, Texas is going to become a republic once again.

Make room for me in hill country, just in the line of fire of a smoker with brisket in the works. I'll change my accent a little, learn to pick Bob Wills' style, and teach the locals to make pasty!

And get Buc-ees to sell pasties!!
Congress woman Barbara Jordan was elegant in describing what is the meaning of San Jacinto. In the Principal Speech at the San Jacinto Commemorative Ceremony for the Texas Sesquicentennial on April 21, 1986 she said, "Freedom. That was what it was all about. Freedom. … The Battle of San Jacinto was not a battle against the Mexican people. Three signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence were Mexican Texans. The Texan Army was made up of many native-born Mexicans, some of whom were killed at the Alamo. Three Mexican states joined Texas in the revolt against the dictatorship of Santa Anna. And freedom . . . that was what it was all about. … We are revolutionaries, we Texans . . . we Americans, born of revolution. Born of a desire for the God-given right of the individual . . . be he brown, white, yellow . . . to live his own life as he chooses. Or, as she chooses. Here at San Jacinto, we won that right for Texas and eventually for Mexico by defeating a dictator. On this 150th Anniversary of that battle, let us publicly state our respect for the dignity of Mary and Maria . . . Juan and John . . . Richard and Ricardo . . . and for their inherent right to choose their own destiny . . . and to enjoy freedom . . . for that was what San Jacinto was all about . . . freedom!"
The consequences of that freedom changed world history. Because of the small 18 minute battle, eventually approximately a million square miles of land changed hands from Mexico to the United States.

To almost quote a Bobby Bare song..There wouldn't be no Texas if it weren't for Tennessee.

The Texit movement is still simmering. Part of California is also looking at becoming its own state. My wife and I went to a B&B in Gonzalez to celebrate our 50th and visited all the historical sites and caught a look at the COME AND TAKE IT CANNON in the Gonzalez museum. That town has more old mansions than anyplace I have ever seen. There is a neat monument near where the first shot of our war for independence happened.

We need to drag the 5th down there before it gets too hot.
I know y'all get tired of me posting about relatives, but my 1st cousin (7 times removed) Sara Reavis married Dr Joel Ponton who was involved in the come and take it incident. Joel's brother was Andrew Ponton who was the Alcaldle (mayor) of Gonzales and wrote the letter to the Mexican commander trying to stall him while the Texans got help.
I think the flag was made from a wedding dress.
