Carbon 36 Towing
Posted this in the toy haulers section too
I searched and didn’t find an answer. Picking up a Carbon 36 Monday and I need a new WDH. GTR is 13k and 10k empty however the hitch weight is some the highest I’ve seen at 1700. It’s about 200 more than anything else. I’m looking at the blue ox 2k coupler weight and 20k trailer weight setup however I’ve always been a fan of Andersen trailer products but their highest class is 1600 hitch weight and 16k gross. Any thought and what’s everyone using? Will be hauling a sxs.

Empty tongue weight is 1720 pounds. Add 60 pounds of propane and a couple of GC2 batteries and you're going to be pushing 1900 pounds of tongue weight before you start trying to "balance cargo/holding tanks"....

You didn't mention what you're going to be using as a tow vehicle, but that kind of trailer "deserves" as many tires on the ground to guide it as you can muster... any half ton, every 3/4 ton that I've seen and some 1 ton SRW trucks are just not "enough for that kind of load"....
You're not towing a "conventional travel trailer with a 10-15% tongue weight. When empty, you're looking at 17% and with batteries/propane, closer to 20% on the tongue. Loading the garage will offset some of that, but how much and which tow vehicle will have a significant impact on towability. That's a "helluva load for a SRW truck" when you consider passengers and cargo in the vehicle as well as the trailer load on the truck.
Anyway, etrailer's take is a minimum 2.5" receiver with the blue-ox hitch they suggest.

Running a 22 duramax 2500 SRW. Ordered the 2k 20000 ox this morning. I’ve been staring at the spec sheet for the week. The monger I like at it I’m thinking whoever put it up there was drunk or a Friday. There’s multiple typos with the specs for the 36. The 35 isn’t much diff but one thing I noticed was 35- has 38 gal waste water tank and 70 grey.
On a 36 the numbers Numbers are flipped.

Take a look at the hitch on your truck. There should be a sticker fot the hitch rating. That much tongue weight will likely exceed the hitch capacity of the truck.

It’s within. Luckily. I still have a hard time believing that’s the weight. Especially since the 35 is damn near the same thing layout wise. Also we arnt getting the generator

GM uses the same class V hitch on all Duramax trucks. I believe the 2022 is rated for 18k conventional towing with 1,300 tongue weight without WDH and 1,800 with WDH. As Flybouy mentioned, you will want to verify all of those numbers. As for the hitch, I’d definitely go with the blue ox 2000. You will need bars with the ability to transfer somewhere in the range of 1,200-1,500 lbs to put weight back on your front axle and move some of the tongue weight back to the trailer axle. There’s a bunch of info out there about setting up a WDH, but IMO the best way is to weigh the truck before connecting, then adjust the tension on the bars to get the front axle back to the same weight with the trailer connected. That will give you a zero difference and restore your steering and braking. You can also do it by measuring ride height, but I prefer checking weights. Seems to result in a better ride/handling.

The 35 and the 36 are two entirely different trailers. Having one bathroom vs two bathrooms changes the holding tank configuration significantly. In the 35, there's one 38 gallon black tank and two 38 gallon gray tanks. Total capacity 38/76) The galley sink drains to one gray and the bathroom sink/shower drain to the other.

In the 36, there are two bathrooms, which makes two black tanks mandatory, so there's only "weight allowance remaining" for one gray tank. Likely for the galley sink and front bath sink/shower. The rear bathroom sink probably drains to the rear black tank, so black capacity is 76 and gray capacity is 38. Which is, as you say, " the numbers are flipped from the 35"
As for the differences in the two trailer weights, the 36 has two slides and an extra bathroom, so all it would take to make a significant difference in tongue weight would be the need to move the axles 6" forward (less tongue weight) or 6" aft (greater tongue weight) to accommodate the slide mechanisms... and then, the 36 is 6" shorter than the 35. If that 6" is behind the axles, it adds to the tongue weight and if that 6" is removed from in front of the axles, it subtracts from the tongue weight. It's hard to "compare the two trailers" because of so many differences, even though they appear to be "close to the same length and brand.....
As for the generator prep, that likely only adds about 30-50 pounds to the trailer weight. it's only a fuel line, transfer switch and a couple feet of ROMEX wiring.

Probably drop into the same black tank. I have generator just not getting one to mount on board. I’m sure that would be an extra 200 lbs.
I certainly appreciate the knowledge. I’m not new to camping but new to a camper this big. Wife got tired of hauling our sxs seperate

You're right, the "generator option" does add about 200 pounds or so to the trailer weight and if it's near the front of the trailer, it's likely "mostly added to the tongue weight"...
on the other hand, a "generator prep option" does not include the generator, just the wiring for it, so significantly less weight added to the trailer and/or to the tongue.

I did not see this mentioned yet. But if you search this forum for "PDI" you can print this PreDeliveryInspection form to have for your walk thru. Take your time and go thru the form with the person assigned to do the walk thru with you on Monday.

Our 34' race trailer likes to be nose loaded for best puil. It's rate for 14,400 and loaded it's 13,900. The WDH is a 14K Equalizer. Best pulling with that trailer is about 2200~2400 lbs tongue weight. I can move the door car back and get it around 1800 but the trailer nose likes to "walk" a bit in that config, vs just tracking along with another 400~600 lbs up on the nose. That's a 3100 lb car with the engine between the trailer axles, 40 gallons of water in front of that in the tank, two quads, a 400 lb generator up there along with the bathroom setup in the front left nose.
