Axle Replacement

It looks like I will be replacing a 4400 lb Dexter axle probably caused by a castle nut backing off and causing hub/brake destruction. In looking at sources, no one seems to carry that one any more. The 5200 lb axle seems like the most likely. It appears to come with 12" brakes while the 4400 had 10" brakes and there is the dilemma, do I just replace the one and have varied braking capacities, or spend the extra $500 or so (parts and labor) to replace both axles?

This is the Dexter page for 4400 lb axles. https://www.dexteraxle.com/docs/defa...).pdf?sfvrsn=2

I would give them a call (574) 295-7888

It will help if you have all the numbers that are on the axle. There should be a number stamped into the axle, and hopefully there is also a sticker with numbers. They should be able to fix you up with the exact same replacement axle that you already have.

If the axle beam and hub shafts are all that you need (along with bearings/races and brake backing plates) then e-trailer and EBay both have that part available for around $180 plus shipping.

If, on the other hand, you're looking for a complete assembly (beam/hub/springs) then you probably will find that impossible to locate from a "new parts distributor".
