Can 2012 Silverado 2500 diesel pull a Cougar 327RES?

Hi All,

I just joined this site. We just put a deposit on a 2012 327RES. I'm just wondering if you guys ever figured your actual pin weight. The catalog says 1,545, but that seems low to me. The actual dry weight of the unit we are getting is 10,140 (cargo cap on sticker says 1,745). GVWR on sticker says 11,945. We just bought a 2011 Chevy Silverado 2500 diesel that states the payload cap is 2,895(on door well). Driver and passenger wt will be around 300lbs. Just want to make sure we have enough truck for this unit. We really like the layout of this unit, but I wonder if any of you feel you wish you had more cargo capacity in your's....
Don't know if we could get our deposit back at this point, otherwise, might consider yours(will tell my other half about yours for sale tomorrow).....

In addition to the weight of the driver and passenger, don't forget the additional weights of fuel, hitches, and any other stuff you have in the back seat and in the box. The 300 lbs that you mentioned above will probably increase once these other weights are added.

I pull the 327 with a 2010 2500 duramax, it has no problems at all handling it. Last time I weighed I had 2,140lbs on the kingpin. Trailer weighed 11,920 lbs loaded.

Thanks for your replies. We are shopping for 5th wheel hitch plate now. What kind (and size) are you using to pull your 327RES? We have a 6 1/2 ft bed, and am toss as to whether to get a sliding hitch or not, even though this cougar has the new 88 degree corners(2012 model). We are told that a 16K is enough, but should we get a 20K? Perhaps if we ever trade up? Or is a 20K more than we would ever need due to the Silverado's capacity anyway? Also which brands are best? Also, should also get that special Mor-ride pin that reduces chucking? It has a rubber plate in the trailer pin.

Thanks for reading my many questions, and taking the time to answer!

Good Choice

Your 2012 chev should be fine. I am pulling with a 2011 GMC 2500HD duramax and my 318SAB has an empty weight of about 9,500lb and a gross weight of almost 12,000lb with a Reese 15K hitch. I just came back from 3,000 km of very mixed driving with no drama, cruise control all the way! Plenty of power for 105kph / 65mph cruise all day, no lugging up hills, occasionally drops to 5th gear on long grades but only drops to 4th on really steep grades. The engine exhaust braking works beautifully, fully controlling steep downhill descents with no brake input and everything is very stable in strong winds, winding roads and under braking. No problem turning and backing - lots of clearance for any reasonable manuever - and I ditched my sliding hitch which I never used and saved a the extra weight. I am really happy with my choice and I think you will be too.

I have a 04 ctd srw and tow a outback 321 frl and it tows great.

The new chevy should be fine. My pin weight last time I checked was about 2100#'s. My hitch is the Reese 16k slider, I've only used the slider one time because I thought I would just try it. I've gotten to the point where I know my turning/radius limits and just adjust my truck from there. Congrats on the new 327 and Happy Camping, Sam

I have a 2011 Chev 2500 LTZ HD diesel 4x4 4 door crew cab with short box. It pulls my new Montana High Country 37 foot model very easily. This truck is amazing and has power to spare. Your new 2012 HD Diesel will be more than enough truck for this trailer. Don't be concerned about it. You'll really be impressed. I know I was! If you have the short box 6.5 ft, I would get a slider hitch like the Pullrite superglide 16K. That is what I have and it works well. Good luck with your new truck and trailer!

I agree Im pulling my new 2012 fuzion 302 with a dry weight of 11,500 lbs with my 2010 gmc 2500 hd duramax with no issues. I installed the pullrite superglide 18k sliding hitch with removable rails. I also installed the airlift rear air bag kit to give the rear end a little attitude adjustment. It stays nice and level with 60lbs in the rear bags. 70 mph cruise with 5.0 dialed in on the brake controller. Good luck

I pull my 327RES with an F-350 single rear wheel 7.3 PSD, long bed. these newer trucks with the transmissions they have more than make up for my 7.3. I wish I could get a 5-6 speed tranny.. BUT I think you would be fine. I have no figures on weights yet. I have got to go to scales.. I believe most newer trucks are designed for these weights and campers. You will love the 327RES. We love ours.. 14 more days til I can camp again..
Oh yes I have a 16K hitch dont need a slider with a long bed truck so i cant answer that one. (husky brand)

What is the speed rating of your Fuzion 5th tires? Just wondering since most TT tires are rated at 60mph rather than 70 mph.

Pulling our 327 with a dodge 2500 with the 5.9, very easy pull. You will love the 327 we looked at the 326 in sping of 2010 but did not buy. Saw the 327 in spring of 2011 and brought it right away.

First of all welcome. We also have the 327RES and tow with a 2010 dodge short box with a cummings diesel. I have a 15 k superslide for a hitch. When I tow I don't even know it's back there. My truck usually stays in 6th gear and avg. 11/12 mpg. The Jake and towing switch on slows me down with hardly braking. Towing is great. My only complaints with the model is the small awning and we would have liked A king bed. Other than that, it's a beauty. Hope you enjoy yours and happy camping.

Unhappy

Beware of payload cap. We have 2010 f-250 crewcab, 6.4 diesel. GVWR 10000 lbs. Tow 2011 Montana High country 323. Dry hitch 1870 lbs. DW and I made a trip to scrap yard to weigh truck, full fuel tank, hitch in back, weigh in at 8485 lbs. OOPs 8485 + 1870 = 10355 , thats 355 lbs over GVWR dry. I would guess after loading it really about 1000 - 1200 lbs over. On a good note the GCWR is 23000 lbs. Have about 9 trips with no problems. Just weighed truck yesterday.
