Northern California to Dallas Texas
Retiring in August and planning our firs long trip with the 5th wheel. We love in Nor Cal and would like to get to the Dallas Texas area. Looking at maps and google, they all take me through southwest desert and I'm not too sure that is a good thing to do in August. Has anyone taken the route and maybe offer a more northerly route we might take?
Thanks.

What would be your concerns about "desert" areas? Living in what would be termed that (or close to it) all my life I can't think of a reason to avoid it (tons of cool stuff) unless you are trying to get by without an airconditioner or water.

Driving across West Texas is kind of boring. US90 (boring), IH10 (boring), IH10 to IH20 (boring). Long stretches of US90 have no filling stations.

The only real routes that make any sense is either I-40 or I-10. They both are pretty hot routes, I-40 cooler while traveling at the higher altitudes, but not enough to make climbing that high with a trailer in tow worth it. Even going I-80 doesn't help much with the heat, and I-90 is just way out of the way. We've traveled both I-10 and I-40 at various times of the year, hot and not so hot, and I would do I-10 instead of I-40. Which ever way you go, enjoy your retirement and drive careful.

I have towed across -40 (Route 66) a number of times. Lots of historical things to see. Last time through was in July and it wasn’t “hot” in my opinion. Congrats on the retirement.

Dallas in August, you done that before?
Tell us what your towing and with what. Makes a difference if you are pulling a 7,000 pound 5th with a diesel, or a 18,000 pound 5th with a F250 gasser, or a mix of either. If you have a modern diesel and a mid size 5th I would do I-40.
Dallas will be hottern 9 kinds of Haell in August, be ready.

Don't know where in N CA you are but looks like I40 would be the route to take. It's about as N as you can get without going WAY out of the way....and gain really nothing weather wise. No matter how you slice it at least 1/2 the trip is going to be in some pretty warm weather.
I40 will offer more in the way of amenities and things to do. Dropping to I10 is out of the way and will probably be even hotter (and more barren). When you get to Dallas just be prepared for "heat". It doesn't get as hot as where I am but I don't have 90 percent humidity. I'll take 105 and 10 percent humidity any day over 90 degrees and 90 percent...any day.

We choose I-10 almost exclusively. Except for Deming, which we like, most of NM to Las Cruces is pretty barren; same for El Paso to Hill Country... but we dig barren.
I-40 (lots of which is old US Route 66) is somewhat more entertaining, if that makes a difference to you. Oatman "wild" burros (minor detour), Williams "Route 66" culture, Petrified Forest, Meteor Crater, the Big Texan steakhouse in Amarillo, then all secondary roads to DFW. We occasionally take it for the novelty factor.

Take I-40 to Amarillo and then Hwy 287 down to DFW. we will be doing the reverse in August. We've done it often. 4 lane all the way.

What Woody said! We drive 40 all the time and it's not bad with regards to steep grades. Much better than 70 or 25 through Colorado. And there is plenty to see and do if you're in tourist mode. Stop by The Big Texan in Amarillo and get a steak! They have parking in the back for RV's as well as big rigs! You're gonna be finding hot regardless of your route at that time of year so just go with it.
