News this morning that goes along with what John just stated; My son-in-law is looking to move his parents to his property, either in a 5th wheel or a tiny home. Apparently the parents are getting forgetful and shouldn’t live where they are now. I’ve advised him to get a tiny house. Bypass the 5th wheel because of the potential complications of full-timing in a RV owned and lived in by two people who are beginning to become forgetful. That just spells trouble in my mind.

Then there's guys like the DWs BIL with a PhD, fortunately I'm not related to him, boughtl their 1st used 5th 30-32', never owned an rv but read & watched u tube videos so knows ALL there is to know about rving, so he says. Takes it to get 4 new tires & blows out 2 on the way home, has them replaced & blows there other 2, I ask what tires did he put on it & he says "P 235 15s" & I said "no wonder that P stands for passenger car" to which he says he's suing the tire manufacturer for selling faulty tires. Then he tries to run their acs from 20 amp plug with a 100' 16 gauge extension cord & claims "they don't have enough electricity". Then informs me when we bought a 40' 5th wheel towing with a Duramax/Allison that I'd be burning up that auto transmission towing that heavy, would need a manual transmission to handle that kind of weight & I'd better be careful turning corners or I'll be taking out cars next to me with the tail swing. These a only of a few bits of wisdom from Mr Know it all, there's a whole list that I could tell, but I'm the idiot that didn't go to college.

And here IS the problem..... if we (the seasoned experts) attempt to lend a helping hand, we are very quickly told just where to go. And it isn't where the sun shines. A couple times of that happening, and it's easier to just sit back and watch. If they want MY help, they can come ask. I've had a hole ripped in my (you know where) one too many times by trying to help. Some people are just to anal and too proud to admit they don't know what in the world they are doing. Manly, egotistical, self pride will cost them in the long run.

The same thing happens "right here in River City".....

Read through some of the threads on this (or any other forum) and you'll find people ask for answers, then berate/belittle the answers because of some "far-fetched reason" that seems appropriate to the person seeking help with a problem. It happens with lots of different problems, but "towing weights" seems to be a "biggie so far this year.... (last year and the year before too)....

Danny,

Your story reminds me of my most favorite “sit back and watch the entertainment” at our campground. BTW - before I start, the camper in this story was not a friendly sort and did not like anyone talking to him.

Father’s Day weekend a few years ago. Guy backs into a grassy spot in his motor home, fancy bus version, with little pickup as his toad, that he parks directly in front of the MH. Proceeds to level the MH without any cribbing, feet, etc under the levelers - did I mention he was on a grass spot? Well, over the course of the weekend (and it was a hot weekend) and his A/C’s dripping down the back of the MH, the rear levelers and back tires are now buried a couple of inches in the grass. Father’s Day morning he goes to leave - without moving the pickup or raising the levelers. He proceeds to try to ?rock the MH loose? by spinning the rear tires by slamming it in forward and then reverse to try to “break loose” from being stuck a few inches. Remember pickup in front of MH and rear levelers still down, sunk in the ground a couple of inches...

At this point, I moved our new truck which was parked in our spot directly across the road from him. By this time everyone else at the campground is congregating off to the side of our spot to watch the show. He kept up the back the forth spinning of the tires for a good 15-20 minutes. At the end, he had buried the rear end up to the axle. And that’s when he finally moved his little pickup from in front of the MH. Finally, a semi tow truck from a town about an hour away was called to come get him out. At the end of the day’s entertainment, there were 2 truck tire sized ruts in the ground that were about 1’ deep, and furrows just like a chisel plow would leave, from the levelers. He was out $800 for the tow and wanted the campground owners to pay for it. Unfortunate for him, we had already told the owners that a few of us had told him his levelers were down before he ever started trying to leave, and he told us exactly what to do with our info.

Yep some people don’t listen. Thinking they know everything even when new. They would rather get into trouble then listen to someone who might know something glad I’m not like that. New to all this myself.

Sad to say I think we will all be seeing more "entertainment" of this nature in the future. We were at a RV park in Southern Utah last October. Understanding that it would freeze that night we unhooked and drained our fresh water hose. The next day while I was taking with the RV park maintenance I asked how many sites had a frozen hose that morning, he stated well over 50% and they were calling him because they had no water. So many people just don't think ahead.

(Full disclosure - I had a frozen hose many years ago but after that I learned my lesson)

During our chat I asked if they had noticed a lot of newbies that summer and fall. He estimated that at times they had as many as 70% of thier spaces were taken by rental units. Also, that many were clueless and many times guests were absolutely amazed to find out that park personnel was not responsible for hooking them up and dumping their tanks. We all know there is a definite learning curve. I don't know if it is the rental company not providing enough instruction or the renter not listening...probably a bit of both. As many have stated previously on this thread, I think most of us we are willing to provide advice and assistance but must be cautious on how it will be received.

What terrific stories Sourdough!
And everyone true as I have witnessed some of the same. My 7 year old grandson even commented ‘he’s doing it wrong pop pop!

In light of the flood of rv purchases and interest during this time, it will be a buyers market in a year or two when they decide this latest frill is not for them.
Pick up an RV that is one, two or three years old with low low miles and two or three camping trips on it.

As a newbie, I'm thankful for forums like this and many others where I can learn what I need to know to use and careful for our "Rolling Nest'. (Got some GREAT guidance from Sourdough & others here about an Accuslide issue.) I've studied hard on water, sewer, power, etc. but am finding that experience is the best teacher. The best help we've had is guidance for backing up our 33' 2017 RLS, and maneuvering it in tight spots. I've found experienced RVers very willing to help out, which we much appreciate!

Yes my friends it is a simple equation: "Lower your pride, raise your income".
We were all "there" at one time and I will offer help if I see something dangerous or damaging is about to occur. But, I will admit the info on these forums has been a great source for avoiding embarrassment (a few times) on my part. Just listen, evaluate, and act.

Yup, 40+ years of camping and can still remember vividly those newbie years Didn't have U-Tube back then, just learned it in the back yard in that used pop up we bought from a friend. Appreciated help we got in campgrounds and kept learning. Then about 8 years ago we got our first 5th wheel and bingo we're newbies again. 5er's are a whole different world in some areas. Just keep learning and smiling and thanking for the help even now. Even when "that guy" is telling me something that I know is wrong, I just smile and say thanks.
RVing shouldn't be a frustrating struggle. We do this to relax and enjoy.

Just yesterday had a problem with the furnace . OK, relax, stay calm and post it here. Within 30 minutes had the solution and bingo, learned something new.

It's a journey.

Had a fellow come to me at a park asking about my diesel dually. He asked "does this one use the high powered exhaust juice?" I said "no this is an '05 & that DEF didn't start til about 2011" then he says "boy I bet if you put a jug of that juice in that tank it would really haul a##!" & I said "YEP! for about 10 seconds, that DEF is 68% water which doesn't burn well in a diesel engine!", he then walked away mumbling.

Well, thought I would make another observation on this thread. Saw a first this morning.

Others may have seen this but I have not. Obvious newbies across the road came in and stayed for a couple of days. This morning they were breaking down and getting ready to go. The sewer line; the lady went out and started disconnecting the sewer hose - no gloves, bare hands, unscrewing the ends, manipulating piece parts and taking it apart. Took all the ends, parts etc. the the park faucet and began working them all over/around the faucet end to clean the. THEN she got the slinky hoses (2 - trailer end had been disconnected) and worked them ALL over the faucet trying to clean the ends, run water through the sewer hose etc. Probably 10 minutes of slopping and splashing crap all over the faucet then turned off the faucet - still no gloves.

Now in my younger days that would not have been such a deal because it was kind of what everyone did. Nowadays, with the knowledge we have and the access to modern protective gear, I was astounded. I had never thought about someone actually doing that at a campground faucet that an unsuspecting individual would hook up to. Told DW I was going to buy a 5 gal. jug of bleach to douse every faucet we come across. facepalm:

Just thought I would throw that out there for thought before you head out on a trip.

...I have to get a new non drinking water/ wash down hose...I bought two of the zero g hoses at Lowe’s ...I’m using one of my old white drinking water hoses for cleanup because it’s really old..it occurred to me this last trip that I was probably causing some disgusted looks from fellow campers when I flushed my sewer hose with it...” omg! Did he just use his drinking hose to clean out his sewer hose?!!!”.....I definitely will change that before next trip.
The zero g hoses are the same color so I’m returning one and getting a different color and shorter length for wash down so I don’t confuse them.

By the way they are great hoses but shop around..target and Lowe’s were cheaper then Amazon

I will def bleach my water spigot as well!

The last two CGs we've gone to lately the escort got out of his golf cart and sprayed down the fresh water connection(s) and the sewer cap with disinfectant at our assigned sites. But that was only because of CV-19. I'm sure in time that practice will fade in due time. I agree with you, large tub of germicide will now be a new addition to the passthrough.

if you use a disenfectant it will last a long time stored. I keep some in my passthru for this purpouse. If you want to mix bleach and water to save money just bear in mind it will loose it's potency in a short time. In a few days you will have a bottle of dalt water.

I was talking about bottles of bleach, not a solution and not to save money. If you had watched what I did torching or replacing the entire faucet setup would have been preferable but for now I'll just soak them in straight bleach.

Be very careful spraying straight bleach or all your clothes will be covered in white freckles.

Yep, got lots of "work" clothes I've accumulated from using it; particularly using Starbrite mold and mildew remover on the bottom side of my awning. Sort of like 70s tie dye I guess.
