We watched a local news story at some spot we parked that stated nowadays the average 40 year old man did not know how/where to check the oil or any other fluids & had absolutely no idea how, if it has one or where to put the jack or use the spare if needed.
My FIL was one of those guys, he could build houses all day long, but had absolutely NO mechanical skills. My 2 BILs are those guys in that news article, they don't know how to open the hood.

TRANSEAGLE ST has gone another step with their 15" all steel radial trailer tire by adding a LRG that produces 3520# of load capacity at 110 PSI.

That GY KAMAX T has a "J" speed letter = 62 MPH.

Almost all European designed 17.5" low platform trailer tires with a "J" (18 PLY) rating also have a "J" speed rating letter.

17.5” sizes - 70 series

245/70R17.5 LHT 143/141 J (146/144 F) 789 803 248 258 360 2406 270 - - 6,75 7,50

(From GY truck tire data book).

Tire litigation is a subject I seldom even mention. However, it is often mentioned in RV forum tire threads. That makes this book a very good read.

Those that follow my tire posts here at Keystone know I’m always researching RV trailer tires, P, LT, ST and low platform. If a consumer has switched to tires considered to be a misapplication, hunting for litigators to represent the consumer may be fruitless.

Your local public library may have copies of this book by Ben Baker.

The following information is from the 2019 Keystone generic owner's manual. They have added some more OEM providers and more tires to existing ones. The phone numbers are a nice reference.

Keystone RV does not administer the warranty for tires. Please contact the tire manufacturer direct at:

1. Americana (Kenda) - 800-225-4714 www.americanatire.com

2. Goodyear - US 800–321-2136/CA 800-387-3288 www.goodyear.com

3. HiSpec Wheel & Tire, Inc (Provider, Grand Ride, Good Ride) – 574-807-8588 www.hispecwheel.com

4. Lionshead Specialty Tire (Westlake, Sterling, Ridgeway, Constancy) - 574-533-6169

www.lionsheadtireandwheel.com
5. TBC (Towmax, Trailer King, Sailun) - 800-238-6469 www.tbccorp.com

6. Tireco (Mudstar) - 800-937-9433 www.tireco.com

7. Tredit Tire and Wheel (Rainier, Arisun) - 855-8-Tredit www.tredittire.com

There is a disparity with the LT235/85R16 RST tires. Many are from GY and are model number G614. There were knockoffs built by other manufacturers used as replacement for the G614 because of the G614s cost.

Because that tire has a single load range (“G”), it is distinct. Meaning it can only be replaced by another like item.

Those tires were almost exclusively used as OE for vehicle certified 7000# axles. Because of the RVIA 10% load capacity reserve recommendation above vehicle certified axles, the G614 and other like sized tires no longer qualify. That’s not to say they can no longer be used on trailers having them as OE. The RVIA recommendation has no grandfather clause. And, it’s just a recommendation, not binding by federal regulations. However, about 98% of all RV trailer builders are members of RVIA and will comply with their recommendations.

The most logical replacement would be the ST235/85R16 LRF (with a completely different load inflation chart). It has the load capacity needed (3970# @ 95 PSI) and has almost identical physical dimensions. However, it’s a polyester tire as opposed to the all steel G614.

I’m sure that sooner or later Keystone is going to have to make a decision about replacement tires for the G614 when asked by consumers for recommendations. If any of the readers of this post have asked Keystone questions about such replacement changes, please let us know how they reacted?

Two Sailun tire failures reported on the Montana Owner's Club forum.

The tires were built in 2020 in Vietnam and are on two different trailers.

There might be a problem with a whole batch/lot.

JD, if you're going to pass on a brand because an owner had a blowout, might I ask what brand are you going to go with? Sailun has the best name in heavy tires on this and other forums, I'm sure we're anxious to know this brand you're going to purchase.

I'm no "tire expert" but from that second pic CW posted it looks to me like the outer tread on on both sides are worn down greater than the center. Possibly run underinflated?

Based on everything I have read here and on other forums, Sailuns were the only tire I was looking at. I will most likely still go that way. It was just a little blow a day or so after moving ahead and checking pricing that this comes out. I think overall Sailuns have the best track record.

That could be cause for concern if you knew something about it other than the aftermath!
How were the maintained?
Were they approriately sized for the load?
Were they properly inflated?
Were they jumping curbs or hitting every pothole?
Too many variables to speculate the cause by 1 photo.
This can happen to any brand at any time!
I had the Sailuns on my last 5er that were highly recommended by dozens on several forums & had no issues.
You buy what you want, keep properly maintained & inflated, most likely you'll not have an issue as long they're not the so called "China Bombs" that are mentioned on every rv forum.
If money's no object you can pay 50%+ more than the Sailuns for a set of made America Goodyear's. Are the GYs 50%+ better tires, I personally don't think so.

There will always be tire failures for msny reasobs as has been pointed out, If a decision is made based on that then good luck finding a suitable replacement.

Those pics without some sort of history of what is going on do not give me any pause running Sailun - their track record is just too good, and, that 2nd photo looks like that tire has been running with an issue that should have been looked at long ago.

I posted this Sailun tire information in this forum because of my suspicions there may be a manufacturing defect in that batch/block/lot of tires dated 2020 from a Vietnam building plant. Those interested in buying new Sailun tires for their trailers should check for made in Vietnam sometime in 2020.

After a closer look at the tire sidewall information on one of the tires in question it became apparent the building plant code cannot pinpoint the actual building plant because the tire’s plant code (1Y) is for a plant in China, not Vietnam. That could be a problem in the event of a recall order for those 2020 tires (4020).

On another note. Sailun has always said that their 16" LRG trailer tires need special high load capacity wheels and to check with the wheel manufacturer to insure the ones you are using meet that standard.

Tire manufacturer's set the standard for the wheels their tires are attached to. (FMVSS refers).

Up-Date: NHTSA has gone from a two character plant code to a three character code. I was using an older plant code guide for the original information above. The older 2 character code 1Y does identify a China plant. However, the 4020 manufactured tire above has the three character identifier 1YJ which is a Vietnam plant code

Here is a link to the new 3 character tire plant codes.
