50 AMP Generator

What is the best brand for a 50 AM Generator? Dual fuel?

Are you looking for a portable one, like ... on wheels, or are you looking to have one install permanently on your camper?

Check the one at camping world. Runs on gas or propane. That’s the one I have haven’t used it camping yet but have run it at the house works just fine.

Don't think that is an inverter generator and it has a noise level of 74 dBA from 23 feet... might be a bit loud.

Champion has a 50 amp parallel kit, which might make more sense. Looks like it will work with generators of 2KW and up.

Do your wallet and your back a favor and install a couple easy starts and get a Wen 3800 Inverter or similar. If you need more than that, get two and parallel them.

Or some people like to get two smaller ones and parallel them to get something equivalent to a single 3800.

A true 50 amp RV connection is 12,000 watts. Most people really don't need anywhere near that much in reality.

As Brian posted, a "true 50 amp generator" (for RV use) would be a 12,000 watt generator. That is in the "range of a "midsize home emergency generator set" and would be impossible to transport with most any travel trailer or fifth wheel. Even a 30 amp 240 volt generator (to connect to a 50 amp RV plug) would be a 7200 watt running/9000 watt starting power system. That's one like the generator that George posted (Champion 100161) weighs in a tad over 200 pounds, sports a 15HP engine (burns about 8 gallons in 10 hours) and takes up much of the bed in a "standard bed pickup"....

Most people "make do" with either a pair of 2000 watt generators, a pair of 2500 watt generators, a single 3500 watt or for the "power users" a pair of 4500 watt ONAN generators paralled to provide a maximum of around 37 amps of 240 volt power. Even that system weighs in at 100 pounds (dry) per generator, so 200 pounds before you add fuel, which is around 7 gallons to fill both. Then add the parallel kit and you're again, taking up half the truck bed and over 200+ pounds of heavy generator.

As suggested, stick with an "enclosed, sound compensated inverter" type generator. If the description includes "open frame" it will produce significantly more noise than your "campground neighbors" will tolerate. Be "campground friendly" and limit your generator selections to "enclosed inverter models" and then, only use them during "generator hours"... Campground generator use is not a 24/7 event.

So, going smaller/lighter is not only space saving, it's "back saving" and more economical to operate.

Like John said^, a lot of folks find that a pair of 2,000+/- watt inverter generators work well. We're just back from 4,000 mile round trip to eastern seaboard. While on the road or stopped for awhile we of course get full hook-ups. But we did 3 NASCAR races which 2 of them had no hook ups. We used 2 Honda 2,000's paralleled with no issues. We didn't need A/C with the cool rainy weather. We have a residential refrigerator so I have to keep the batteries well charged. I usually started both gens in the morning and ran them both 2-3 hours and then just one until about 9 pm. Worked well.

This ^^^ Have been using a pair of champion 2000W with the parallel kit with a 50amp plug. Works great. Also, in the spring/fall when I don't need AC I only use 1, and they are only around 50-60lbs.

I have 2 Cummings Onan P4500I inverter generators I run in parallel. I've run absolutely everything in my camper all at the same time with not issues, exactly the same as plugged into 50 amp shore power. ... 2 AC, microwave, electric on water heater, residential refrigerator, 2 televisions, electric fire place and an electric skillet. No issues.

On the down side, yes, they weigh in at 105 pounds each ... dry and empty. They hold 3.4 gallons of gas, and re not dual. They are incredible quiet though, at least compared to my old King Craft generator I've had for 20 years and STILL runs flawless! But is louder than a lawn mower!

When running one generator alone, it spits out 30 amps with no problems. That's not enough to run both AC in my fifth wheel, but if using power management (same as if plugged into 30 amp shore power), one P4500i by itself does a pretty darn good job!
