Covid and RV Sales

Here is a link to an interesting article I read today. The video is about owners renting their RVs when not in use and the article is about how Covid has impacted RV sales positively.

On a somewhat related note, I received the following from my investment advisor on the topic of whether RV-related industries had the potential to become better investments:

Quote:
We analyzed three companies that would be beneficiaries of an uptick in a higher demand for RVs post-COVID-19. These companies are Thor Industries (THO), Winnebago Industries (WGO) and Camping World Holdings (CWH). None of the three scored well in our quantitative screener. All three scored particularly poorly in Risk due to relatively high volatility and betas, each of them scoring in the bottom 10% of the 1,000+ companies we analyze within the Risk category. None of them achieved a score that put them within the top 30% in any of the five categories we analyze. Since they do not screen well and significant sustainable competitive advantages are hard to rationalize for them, they do not warrant the more intensive due diligence that would be required. While it may end up being the case that RV sales exceed current expectations, those are the not type of calls where believe we have an edge vs. the market. We would also note that all three stocks have bounced materially from their March lows and all are now trading near 52-week highs, so you are not alone (anymore) in thinking RV sales will recover quickly. Therefore, we believe it makes more sense to stick to our process and focus on companies that appear to be more attractive based on the methodology that we specialize in.

Today, I received this mailer from Camping World:

Quote:
We're dropping the prices on our used and overstocked RVs to make room for new 2021 models! SAVE BIG on select RVs before they go to auction!
"Help! Our empty lots are overstocked!"

I thought COVID had emptied the sales lots. I guess it's hard to keep sales stories consistent.

I don't know what their situation is, but, it sounds like their "used and overstocked" are used RVs?? I was just in my dealership today and they do have some new upper end models but the rest are generally used RVs moved to the "front lines" it appears. Don't know but I'm going to keep an eye out when we head to FL in a few days; we pass dozens of big dealerships on the way.

We just picked up our new 5th wheel yesterday. The lot was pretty full of new units! Mostly Cougars and Outbacks. Salesman said inventory had been rolling in over the last month! Still was hurting for A and C class.

Hey hey! Sounds like it might be picking up! That's a good thing. Hope they can fill the lots and get everyone working and making a living again.

Well, they also tell a lot of 1/2 ton truck owners that they can tow those "special 1/2 ton towable trailers" to!

I can tell you I am being told four months on a new one to order and nearly nothing on local lots not presold. Also sold my 2015 for handsome price.

The 2021 version of my 2020 camper is about $7000 more “on sale” per the email I got from CW... seriously, a 239ML isn’t worth $27000.

We can’t keep used on the lot, have 2 right now. Small trailers sell almost as fast as they come in. Big 5th wheels are still available. As sales slow down over the next few months, the manufacturers will get inventories restocked. They’re finally getting caught up on sold/ordered units. Still can’t get class A and C because of chassis shortages. Still a huge issue with air conditioners as well. My guess the camping world mailer is just an attempt to keep sales moving as we head into the fall
