new truck

I am in the process of purchasing a new truck to replace a Silverado 1500 which pulls my 27RBS....I test drove the Ford 250 XLT 6.2L gas and the dodge 2500 Big Horn 6.7 diesel...both are good trucks. Eventually I will go bigger with the trailer in a few years. is the additional expense work the squeeze?

If going to a bigger trailer, especially a 5er just buy an F350 now.

Or a 3500 Ram or GM, they work just as good or better!
Let the fun begin!

F350 or 3500HD - the extra GVWR is worth it. If going bigger in the future and you have the $ get the diesel

We purchased TrailLight TT a few years ago, and it towed fine with my (then) 2015 Ram 2500 4x4 diesel. We upgraded to a Cougar 333MKS and within a few months I upgraded to a 3500 DRW 4x4 diesel, just to be safe. Very happy I did, and now I can safely (and legally ) tow any of the 5r's currently on the market, when it comes time to upgrade.

I think your personal situation plays into this.

You state you WILL go to a bigger trailer "in a few years". WILL means you need to get a bigger truck - a diesel. If you go that route I would just go ahead with the 350/3500. "In a few years" is somewhat open ended and brings finances, what your trailer is now etc. into play.

If "a few years" is long enough to wear out the vehicle you are buying now, and a 6.2 or equivalent will be up to the task of what you need, you may want to opt for the gas model to save bucks up front then buy the new diesel when you buy the new trailer (a large cash outlay).

Size of the new trailer can also dictate truck size. Looks like your current trailer is around 8k gvw. A "bigger" trailer could mean a lot of different things. 10k would be a sizeable upgrade, but at that point you could still use a 6.2 or 6.4 gas engine....if you wanted to. Anything over that and I would highly recommend a diesel. If you stayed in the 10k range you then have to make a personal decision if the increased cost of the diesel would fit into your personal situation. In my case it didn't. My 6.4 and our 10k gvw trailer are a very good match. It's your call based on the criteria you come up with for the trailer replacement. And yes, if you are going over 10k the diesel is worth the extra "squeeze".

Gas=2500
Diesel=3500

Up to you to decide if the Diesel is worth the premium for your situation.

I went from a 1500 with full tow package, 4.10 rear end, yada, yada, yada...Moved into a 3500 Duramsx SRW and will never go back less than that again. For me, it just fire, toeing my you hauler is now a pleasure, and I can't wait to start the next trip. YMMV. Mine won't.
