Step Modification

Had to alter the steps in our Cougar 327 RES, the step was just to big and hard on the knees for both me and the wife. We changed the carpet, we found one that was very close to the original in color.
We stained the risers. Didn't think of getting before pictures but here are a couple of the finished job.

Looks great. I'm glad to see that I am not the only one whose body is ageing faster than my brain ...... I swear those steps have grown since we got our Cougar.

Nice job, Joecycle. And, I agree 100% [with you & Hank]... RV steps can be tough on tired knees (& my short legs).

I'd really like to rebuild mine in drawers. Anyone done that mod?

VERY nicely done; looks as if it came from the factory that way!

I rebuilt my steps also because of the height of the step. Those two tall steps were just too much in the morning. I hinged each step for added storage. I was going to do drawers but that was going to be more complicated.

I like the concept, have this mod on my "to-do" list as well. I like the way you trimmed out the front and left edges of each step. What product did you use? Was it a glue-on veneer, or did you find something with the channel or U shape for the 3 surfaces?

Thanks in advance.

The step, tread is made from 3/4" oak plywood with an solid oak strip glued to the edges then rounded over with a router bit. The sides and riser are also 3/4" oak plywood. I glued a reinforcing piece at the hing attachment so the tread would not sag when stepped on. Everything sanded, stained and varnished.

Check out this thread. Some of the pictures are gone but mine are down into about 5 -7 posts into it. Lots of us did the same thing. The newer 327RES have the extra step.
I believe the folks at factories tour these sites looking to see what was done to make things easier and better. lots of folks on here have done this same mod.
MY wife loves it as do I and the dogs.
