Hot water ?

I recently got a 2002 Montana , seem like the water is getting too hot, a pressure valve on the top side keeps a steady drip as it heats up. is there a way to turn down the heat. Or do I need to change something.

Jim, I would first actually get the temperature of your water by letting it run at the bathroom sink (closest to the water heater) and see how hot it actually is. And to answer your question, yes, there are two thermostats located under the two reset buttons on the outside where you see the valve which is leaking. They cost about $15 and there is one for the 12 volt (propane) system and one for the 110V system. They will be available in an array of temperatures from your friendly parts lady.

It seems the question is: "How do I stop the pressure valve from dripping as the water heats up?" not, "My water is too hot, how do I change the temperature?"

If the question is the first one, then there may be nothing wrong. The pressure relief valve will leak for many reasons, the two primary causes are first, the loss of an air gap in the water heater. The air gap allows water expansion as it heats without building up pressure (which causes the pressure relief valve to do what it's designed to do, leak out water to relieve excess pressure).

The second, if the water is too hot, first determine if it's while on propane or while on electric or both. Depending on "which one is too hot", then you can purchase (probably by special order only) a replacement thermostat (set for a lower temperature) for that circuit at a good RV parts store. Don't expect to walk into any "run of the mill parts store" and find someone knowledgeable in water heater thermostats, you'll probably be the first customer asking this year, maybe in the last two or three years, because most people "just live with the too hot water" and either re-establish the air gap to stop the relief valve leak or "just live with that too"....

The drip from the relief valve could be because you lost the air pocket in the water heater tank. To fix this is easy.

Turn off the water supply

Open a hot water tap in the trailer

Open the pressure relief valve until water stops coming out then let it snap shut

Close the water tap inside the trailer

Turn on the water supply

I hope this helps!
