Surge protector

I was just wondering how to hard wire in my progressive surge protector. I have a 2003 Montana and in the front where the battery is there is a gray box with the service wires come into the trailer. There are 3 wires. I believe one is the line the other is the load and the last is for the inverter not sure. Question is I have seen where some people remove the fuse/beaker panel and wire it there. Which is the best place to put it behind the panel or by the battery? Which wire in the battery area is the load or when I remove the cover on the gray box it will tell me?

You will not be wiring the surge protector to the battery system. This unit will be wired into the AC power line that enters your rig and before the wires reach the AC main breaker, and that is why some install the protector near the breaker panel. If you are not familiar with electric wiring, I would suggest hiring this chore out to a qualified person so your protector installation doesn't burn down your rig.

I have decided to go with a portable one. It's easier to send in if it goes bad. Easier to hook up. Can use it on my next 5er when I trade up. It's way cheaper too. Save me money to buy my air bags. Thanks

I just bought a used 50 amp surge protector off of Craig's List that listed for over four hundred, got it for $150.00 plus some other RV stuff that the guy just gave me because he had sold his RV for health reasons. Used it the other day. CG lost power one night and the surge protector kicked in and worked fine. It has a built in restart delay to allow the A/C to shut off.

Cheap insurance when you consider the replacement/repair of the appliances in our RV's!

I went with the Progressive hard-wired unit, based on the recommendations on the forums here and the better reviews on Amazon, compared to the TRC reviews.

I hope we get to try it out in a campground real soon

Same here. I didn't want to deal with mine walking away so I went the hard wired route.

Wired a progressive last year.what I did, unwired ac breaker pannel and terminated these wires to the input of surge unit. Bought 6' number 6 gage wire and wired to output of surge unit other end back to breaker
That's it hardest part deciding where to mount the thing.

I have gone with the progressive 30 AMP hard wired unit years ago. Has worked well over the years. Mounted ours under the cabinet in the rear where the cord comes in, removed the 4S junction box and replaced it with the unit. Redid the cabinet front so I could remove it and check the LED readout. This past year it has saved us a few times, once for low voltage (89V) and once for a reversed ground from the park pedestal. Money well spent, wouldn't be without one now. Happy Campin....

I use a Progressive on the power pedastels at the campgrounds. I lock it on with a Python Cable Lock. Only way it walks away is a thief with very good cable cutters.
