Slide Question.

We pick-up our new hideout 38bhds tommorrow. It has a super slide and standard slide. We've never had slides before. This is going to be permenantly set at our lake property, given that should we bring the slides in when we aren't there or would we be better off leaving them out full time?

This has been discussed here before, you will get opinions for both. If you use the search function you can probably find those discussions. In the end, I believe the everyone pretty much agreed that it is a matter of personal preference.

I've had trouble with search option. I bring it up and when I try to type it dissappears. I was just thinking since it wasn't moving leaving them out there's no wear on the seals, but then should I put support under them to avoid potential leaks possibly from snow weight. I understand there can be a lot of personal preference, but surely there should be some solid facts of somesort pertaining to this.

You would want to avoid weight on the slides so if snow is a potential, I would pull them in. Another thing to consider is that your seals are exposed to the elements more when the slides are open, you would want to condition them more often. One thing I always consider to be the most compelling argument is that it is more difficult and therefore less likely that anyone will break in/steal anything if the slides are in. I haven't looked at your floor plan, but many RVs are very tight inside when closed up and many compartments are not accessible.

Putting supports under slides is a big no-no. If a tire goes flat or just looses air it can put too much stress on the slide. If you check your manual you will see that the slide should be exercised regularly. So bringing them in when you leave and out when you return solves that problem. Just be sure to clear debris from their roofs before bringing them in. I store my Cougar at home with my slide out, but I pull it in before severe weather or snow. Not being there you don't have that option so I would bring them in. JM2˘, Hank

If your RV site is in an area where it needs to be winterized and is left sitting unused over the cold winter months, I'd bring the slides in. Our slides are retracted over the late Fall, winter, and early Spring months and we have never experienced any problems leaving them in.
It does say in our owner's manual that the slides should be "exercised" from time-to-time to "lubricate" the mechanism but once they are retracted over the winter, I just leave them in and haven't bothered to extend & retract them.

We do get some occasional snow over the winter in addition to plenty of rain so I'd rather have the slides in rather than extended. I think they are less susceptible to leaking if they are retracted. You wouldn't have to bother putting supports under them if they are in and you are concerned about the extra weight of the snow on the slide roof. As mentioned above, putting supports under a slide is not a good idea.

OK, sounds like taking them in is the best option. Thank you for the info. I'm familiar with exersizing things. I have things on our Lance 1130 like the generator and such that I exersize monthly. We are setting this up on block supports, thats why I mentioned supporting the slides if I left them out full time. After the info here we will be retracting them so that wont be an issue. Thanks again.

We are in a seasonal park in Michigan and right or wrong, I can tell you everyone leaves the slides out the entire summer and closes them up for the winter....no exercising happening here. Again, not saying it's correct, just giving real world experience.
