Override on power front jacks

Hi there

Just picked up our 5'er tonight from the dealer, very excited to get out soon in it. As I was locking it up this evening in the driveway, I locked all the doors, checked to ensure propane was off, and then turned off the battery switch (we had tea and listened to music in it in the driveway!). However, even with the battery off you can still use the power leveling Jacks and the switches are fairly obvious and exposed on the outside. Any person could theoretically walk by and play with the leveling system, likely not a huge deal but I would rather find a workaround.

Now, I am fairly new to all this so perhaps there is an override switch I am just missing. If not, and this is common, has anyone "mod'd" this to include a separate kill switch for the Jacks in one of the locked compartments?

Thanks for your help

I'm not aware of any "kill switch" that targets the front landing jacks - so I don't think you are missing anything.

One option would be install such a switch inside the front compartment. The wires to the switch are very accessible so it wouldn't be hard to put in one.

Another option is to install another battery cutoff switch right at the battery at either the + or - terminal. You'll get different opinions as to which terminal is best but either one will work.

These cutoff switches are readily available and both RV and marine retailers - I prefer the heavier duty marine type. Some are a simple and cheaper blade type which you simply "throw" to cut off the 12VDC right at the terminal, others are keyed or rotated (the marine varieties) and wall mounted. All of these switches will cut off 12VDC to the entire RV and to everything that runs off 12VDC. I believe your cutoff switch doesn't isolate everything.

All of the fifth wheels I have owned or worked on operate in that fashion. Even the vast majority of the bumper pulls with electric tongue jacks are like that.

As has been suggested, adding a battery cut off switch at the battery would work. You could also put a toggle switch inside the compartment as a "kill switch". If you decide to use a toggle switch make sure it's rated for the number of amps the landing gear motor will draw.

If theft deterrence is your goal, a king pin lock is IMO a lot easier.

All very good ideas. I have a hitch lock, so theft is not really my concern, just don't want kids (or adults!) walking by and fiddling with it, as the nose is close to the sidewalk and visible.

I like the idea about the fuse - good use of the K.I.S.S (Keep It Simple Stupid) principle. I may look into the switch idea in the front storage compartment too - I've added switches before (on my snowmobile) and it's not too complex. If I go this route I will keep you all posted.

Thanks again for your input!
