Well I will throw in my 2 cent's worth

Ford is what I drive, a 2000 F-250CCSRW with the 7.3L, and I love the truck I just added a PHP Hydra chip with tunes you get the power is amazing, I can't believe how under powered Ford makes these trucks. But the new 6.7L until they get a few more years under their belts, I'm staying away from it.

Chevy, my brother has a 2010 Duramax, it's a nice truck but I don't care for the hood design and the interior I find plain, what I do like is that the duramax with allison tranny is a great combo.

Dodge, I love the Cummins powerplant, I was a diesel tech right after high school and rebuilt injectors and pumps, we never worked on the cummins stuff it was that good back in the day. The only thing I hear bad about the Dodge is poor drivetrain and poor resale value.

Now if I could build my ultimate truck, it would be:

Ford body
Cummins engine
Allison tranny

Not sure where you are hearing poor resale valule? In my area in Ontario older Dodges command big premiums compared to Ford or GM.
We have 5 older DRW 3500 on road every day. 1996,1999,2001,2003,2004.5and a new 2013. These 5 trucks have over 1.5 million miles combined.(These trucks are replaced with same because they are the easiest and least costly to maintain of the big 3 and do not have expensive emission system to repair.)

The new Aisin trans in the 2013 DRW has a 285000km(176985mile) factory warranty and is at the very least, the equal of the Allison (traded in a 2011 DRW Dmax on the 2013 RAM)

My 2 cents worth is just that, down in the south I beleive Dodge does not hold a good resale value, and this was over 8yrs ago but I drove a tow truck for a company that was contraacted too tow everything for a local Dodge dealer, and we regularly towed in the dodge trucks because of transmission issue's, I even had a guy completely blow a pinion out the back of the rear cover But sorry unless Dodge has made HUGE changes in drivetrain, I wouldn't own it.

It's great that your having success with your Dodge's, I love the Cummins engine, wish I could get one in my Ford, not that I want or need to replace my 7.3L but I think it's a great engine.

I would imagine if your company had a contract with a Ford or GM dealer you would have towed a lot of them also. They all have their quirks.

I too own a Ram/Cummins with the 6 SPD 68RFE auto transmission best truck I ever had.

All truck/car manufactures have had issues with the transmission from time to time. I had a 1996 Chevy that the sun gear walked off of the main transmission shaft was not assembled correctly. My 2001 Chevy had early on shifting issues needed to be re-flashed.

Now I also know of issues with the Ram 47RE/48RE transmissions too; my son has a 06 that he twisted the input shaft to the transmission on his last summer running at Joliet International Speedway. Oh by the way he is producing 800 HP/1600 lb-ft with his 5.9L so the transmission is always the week link.

I would bet that most of the trucks that were on your hook were not stock and where producing more HP than the transmission was rated for.

Although we haven't heard from the OP, retiredsorta, I am sure that by now he/she has a pretty good sampling of peoples' opinions. We have heard from some who say it really doesn't matter - all are very good trucks. We've heard from some who say that one brand is a bit better but still give credit to the competition and finally from some who are loyal to one brand only and make no comment about the rest.

Perhaps we should wait for the OP to come back and respond to the opinions expressed since it looks like this thread is slowly becoming, like some other towing and tow vehicle discussions, not particularly productive or helpful.

Don't feel bad! You have your right to your opinion. This forum is just top-heavy with members who drive Cummins, and pounce on anyone who disagrees with them. I used to drive a Cummins, and had that "I'm king of the road" thing going on. I still like Dodge and Cummins, and feel that they are a great combination, but to say they are the best is just a matter of opinion. All three make great trucks now, and the OP should just buy the truck they like.

Personally. Even though I prefer the way the 6.0 Powerstroke sounds and pulls our 5er, for the sake of longevity, I would keep our truck, and put in an '06 or older Cummins engine. Pretty sure it can be done, since I swear I heard one awhile back. I would keep the Ford tranny. Really like how well it holds the load back going downhill.

New Diesel Opinion

Just what I expected. Still haven't decided. For those that complain about opinions, just keep in mind that opinions are like butts, everyone has one and they all stink!!!!! I do appreciate all of the butts, I mean opinions. It's good to be loyal to something. I'll let you know my decision very soon. Thanks everyone!!!!

And honestly the best truck out is a "Kenworth"

Since the OP just commented that he has the information he expected and will notify us when he decides which tow vehicle to purchase.... AND since the thread has turned to "heavier than normal RV use" truck "name calling" It is closed.
