New York City - camping

I wanted to know if anyone has any recommendations on camping (full hookup) near NYC. Planning a trip this summer and this would be the last stop on the way home with our oldest grandchild. Thought it might be interesting to spend 2 nights and do something in NYC.

I did find RV place near the statue of liberty. The problem there is this will be the last stop and I want to dump/clean my tanks.

Anyplace even on rail service to the city for a day trip would be good.

thanks

We parked the rig in an RV park near East Stroudsburg, PA years ago when we had to go into the city and out the island. It wasn't too bad of a drive, but we were a couple days in a hotel, then back to the rig for the night, then gone the next morning. We didn't want to get too close to the city with the rig.

If you are camping in NJ near Staten Island, you can park (reasonable cost) and take the free ferry in to the south side of Manhattan. Really great views of the Statue of Liberty on the way.

Not sure about how far out you would need to be in NJ, as there are a lot of chemical plants around.

Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City, NJ. We stayed there a few years ago. Yes, it's a big parking lot. Sewer and electricity with a dump station. Ferry to Wall Street across the fence from RV Park. Would stay there again because of the convenience.

"dump station" so it has a dump station...that may do. The other option was possibly a stop in around Newport RI to bring the granddaughter through some mansions there.

The key is that this is the last stop and need to clean those tanks!

It is exactly why...I am NOT a city person and have always felt they should close the city down for a week and hose it down!....but there are some unique things that are interesting to say the least.

When I see NYC on the news, it appears that camping in that city is very very popular.

They had a dump station when we were there. Best to call and check, but I'm sure it's still there.

I want to go to NYC too. Just drive down 5th Avenue.
I’m pretty sure with Texas plates and a cabover camper I have a good chance of getting pulled over and searched.
Since we are both genealogy nuts Betty has people from Poughkeepsie that we need to research. We found a KOA in Newburg? that had a deal with a tour company that picked up at their office for NYC tours. That would be my first choice. Croton Point if I didn’t want the tour.

Haha...we are doing a loop to upstate NY down through Ohio to Nashville then to back to NH stopping in Gatlinburg, then to Natural bridge/Blue Ridge, then to Hersey PA and one more stop... The return trip will be with out oldest grandchild so want to make it interesting so her siblings will be jealous and they all will want to come in the future.

“ There were a total of 505 murders in Indiana in 2020, or 7.5 for every 100,000 people — the 15th highest murder rate among states. For comparison, the national homicide rate stands at 6.5 per 100,000.”
Of all the places DW and I have been in more than 50 years of travel, NYC is one of few that we couldn’t see in a week. Safer than Indianapolis and surely safer than Memphis.

I think that's Los Angles and the dump station is called the sidewalk.

You need to be careful where ever you go. We have been in NYC a good number of times.
We visited Elis Island, Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Ground Zero, and more.
I have never felt unsafe at any time while there.
I think many people watch hours of negative news on tv and end up thinking they're in danger just going out the front door of the house.
The news shows love it because people stay home and watch more negative news shows. That boosts their rating way up and makes celebrities out of the commentators.
I know there are dangers, but it's no where near as bad as you see on tv.
Remember everything gets on the news today...ratings...ratings. Cameras are everywhere.

Heard on the news today that Memphis was THE MOST dangerous major metro area in the country. As the husband to an Elvis fan, we stop in Memphis every time we go through Tennessee. Didn't realize this....

Just what you’re looking for. As mentioned, ferry to Wall St. right on site, or four block walk to Path Train to Manhattan. Good security, clean restroom/showers.

Would do it again. No kumbiya fire ring. It’s just a place to park with hookups, and enjoy your morning coffee while gazing at the Statue of Liberty from the Jersey side. Good for a base of operation while in “TheCity”!

Good luck,

I spend a lot of time in NYC for work and never worry, If you stay in any of the tourist areas it is fine except for the street scammers. Now if you are talking Baltimore of Philly or even DC it is another story. Have fun.

Black Bear Campground in Florida, NY is 1 hr 20 min from NYC. Is convenient to I-87 & I-84. I agree with other posters about going to NYC but to each his own. Good luck.

It’s a little sketchy getting there, although we have done it twice coming down from CT. Wildwood state park on the north shore of Long Island. Way out. Wading river is the town. Actually a beautiful area once you’re out that far. Lots of vegetable farms, turf farms, and horse farms. You can catch the train into the city, not sure how far the nearest station is, but it can’t be far. As it’s on the North shore, it’s not as crazy as the south shore with the Hamptons etc. Even with traffic it’s worth biting the bullet to go to Montauk Point beaches. Amazing. Basically 120 miles out into the Atlantic. One time we went there the beach was closed to swimming. 12 foot waves rolling in. Quite a sight. Oh, and lots of full hookup sites BTW
