Cicadas

If your heading out for a camping trip anytime soon bring something to clean the cicadas off the front cap..heading home from Delaware yesterday it was like flying through flak on a bombing run over Germany in 1944. Really hard to clean up

Best thing you can do is have a good coat of wax on it. Then if trouble spotting soak the spot with a wet rag laid over the bug splat to soften up the bug guts. Those cicada's gut are like glue.

Out here in the Mid-Atlantic the swarms are showing up on the weather radars. They come out every 17 years. I think it was the 1987 emergence that was like this one. They were so heavy then that ion some parking lots and tree lined roads the road would be appear to me "moving" and when you drove over them you could hear the "crunching" under the tires. It's like a Hitchcock movie.

Not all cicadas have the 17 year cycle. The ones we have in Texas can be on an annual cycle or a 2-5 year cycle.”

What Javi said is true for the Memphis area also. The 17 year is the heaviest, but we see them every year, a few here and there.

We get the yearly and others as well. The 17 year brood is another breed. The swarms can be biblical and entertaining as well. These things are horrible flyers and down right clumbsy at it. They don't cause any harm unless you have tinnitus. Some areas have swarms recording over 90 db (some reports up to 120 db) and reports of folks having the noise trigger hearing issues.

As for bug splat, I remember years ago (back in the late 1980's driving along the Susquehanna River north of Harrisburg, PA. The Mayflies were so bad I had to stop every 5 miles or so and scrub them off the windshield as the wipers and wiper fluid would just smear it like raw egg yoke.

How do you motorcycle riders on the forum handle giant bugs? It must be alarming to have a giant cicada hit you in the face while riding down the highway.

I had a cicada fly just above my windshield and just below my helmet... hit me square in the forehead and it stunned me a bit, glad I was only going 30.

After that I got a full-face helmet.

"Back in the day" (60s/70s) I rode with no helmet, shield or anything like that. Driving down the highway (the cicadas were going strong), I turned to talk/yell to DW (on her own bike). I turned back to see the road and as I swiveled my
head one of them hit me square in the corner of my eye and stuck there. I was hollering 9 ways from Sunday as I brought the bike to a stop, DW thinking I had just flipped out. I thought I had been blinded by something but could feel "it". She came running over to help; by then I knew something was stuck in there. She could see what to do and pulled the thing out. It was a miracle that it didn't ruin my eyeball.... but I sure had a runny, stingy eye for a good while. Didn't make full face helmets then but I sure got a helmet and face shield.

Yeah! And Texas bugs are bigger... not sure if I have ever seen a cicada but traveling to Florida in an F150 a number of years ago I had one of those bug deflectors mounted on my hood and it broke when I hit a herd of those Florida bugs. Unreal.

I got hit in t he forehead by a June bug, about 1 ounce of "hardboiled eggshell filled with gooey, sticky nougat cream"... It stung like hell at 60MPH and I'm really surprised it didn't knock me out... Like Bob 03, after that, I always rode with my full face shield down and completely covering my face...

Motorcycle riders are not affected by bugs ... well ... maybe they are!

You can ALWAYS tell who is a happy motorcycle rider by the number of bugs caught in his/her teeth!

(I use to ride, I do miss those days!)

This guy had his car window open and a cicada flew in and hit him in the face... he screamed like an 8 year old girl and promptly drove into a pole. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...s-car-n1270213

I just heard of a caution about these bugs. If you are allergic to shellfish, they say not to eat cicadas because they have the same effect on people that have the shellfish allergy. 😳

I don’t have to worry about that..I have no desire to eat a cicada..unless one landed in my lifeboat if I was adrift at sea...and even that would be under protest

That would be called "fish bait" in my lifeboat.
