I have the height challenge, at 6'3" I'm always hitting my head I know, that explains a lot.
Similar to Bruce I use a boat hook. Not for reaching above but rather for retrieving things from the truck bed. An 8' bed with a cap results in having to jump in and squat to get to the front.
The boat hook is useful for getting stuff from the center of the pass thru as well.
