Don't get less than the 1 ton you mentioned & if towing quite a bit go diesel, you'll never find a gasser that will even come close to the towing ability of a diesel regardless of gear ratios or engines. For now diesel fuel is cheaper than gasoline. The added feature of the exhaust brake alone on the diesel makes it worth it.
