It could be low voltage/discharged battery or it could be the unit signaling its failure or expired monitor chip. Check the owner's manual for the meaning of the "beep every 35-40 seconds. You may also find the "signal information" printed on the faceplate of the CO monitor. Some have the "signal meaning" printed, some are only in the owner's manual.
