So, I messed with it some last night. Seems to just be really stiff going up from lack of use. I got it to go up almost all the way, so were happy. Had to be careful not to pull the bottom stanchions loose from the wall. I think I'll keep working it up/down to see if loosens up and store it up for a bit to see if that helps. No string problems as far as I could tell. Eventually I might replace it with a roller shade, those look nice.
