Don't forget if you trade a vehicle in they deduct trade value from purchase BEFORE taxes (which in this lovely state of NY equated to just shy of $3,000). So if you sell outright add the tax to price.
Skillet is correct. You should factor in sales tax if it applies to you. Trading in at $36k compared to selling at $40k(private party, carmax) at 8% sales tax rate would be a near wash and I would trade in to skip private party hassle and time.
