Those aren't black flies. We call them "love bugs" because they attach themselves to each other to mate, I assume. They are all over the southern US. Their season is about over.
Where were you going that you went through Galveston to avoid Houston? Ain't no way.
I grew up in Houston, so to me it's not too hard to drive through it. I've pulled our trailers through it at rush hour with no issue.
One insult deserves another one back: If you gave me 10 sections of southern New Mexico, I'd give it back to you. The proverbial feces hole.
