I am assuming we are talking about Dicor? I've seen it crack and get brittle, and look generally bad, on old trailers. 18 months would be awfully fast to get as bad as it sounds. It will get cracks in it. I've never used a cover so don't know if that would affect it or not. I think several members do so they would know more about it.
