On my AC, there is a damper on the face of the unit which forces air into the duct work. When the AC is working hard, it tends to freeze if the damper is closed. If I open the damper, it does not.
So, during the day, I open the damper so the air blows down from the AC. At night I close it to direct the air to the bedroom. I think I get more air flow with the damper closed.
