"Back in the day" (60s/70s) I rode with no helmet, shield or anything like that. Driving down the highway (the cicadas were going strong), I turned to talk/yell to DW (on her own bike). I turned back to see the road and as I swiveled my
head one of them hit me square in the corner of my eye and stuck there. I was hollering 9 ways from Sunday as I brought the bike to a stop, DW thinking I had just flipped out. I thought I had been blinded by something but could feel "it". She came running over to help; by then I knew something was stuck in there. She could see what to do and pulled the thing out. It was a miracle that it didn't ruin my eyeball.... but I sure had a runny, stingy eye for a good while. Didn't make full face helmets then but I sure got a helmet and face shield.
