We get the yearly and others as well. The 17 year brood is another breed. The swarms can be biblical and entertaining as well. These things are horrible flyers and down right clumbsy at it. They don't cause any harm unless you have tinnitus. Some areas have swarms recording over 90 db (some reports up to 120 db) and reports of folks having the noise trigger hearing issues.

As for bug splat, I remember years ago (back in the late 1980's driving along the Susquehanna River north of Harrisburg, PA. The Mayflies were so bad I had to stop every 5 miles or so and scrub them off the windshield as the wipers and wiper fluid would just smear it like raw egg yoke.
