I inspect, repair and maintain high voltage breakers (2300V, 4160V, and 13.8Kv) and I've come across instances of mice and rats taking them out by going phase to phase or phase to ground. It ain't pretty!
Glad you got your A/C back and running....this isn't the time of year for a failure.
